Re: ramadam

Hey gayle, it's not a problem, as indicated each and every one of us is entitled to his / her own opinions. Is that not why we all come on to Accy Web...........to have our say, and join in the debates

One thing about Gayle is, she is big enough to hold up her hand and apologise.....I think that is a very good attribute.

Re: ramadam

Errrrr, thank you, but I didn't actually realise I'd apologised there.

But if it does make anyone feel any better, I will apologise for butting in when it probably wasn't necessary. I'm a white, semi-lapsed catholic, what the heck do I know about it!

Well, you might not have used the word apologise Gayle, but that was the tone of the response....unless I have read it wrong!

Re: ramadam

Fast, Don't fast. It is a matter for the individual to decide for him or her self. What I object to is religionists who insist on wearing their piety on their sleeves. "Look at me, I'm fasting for a twelve hours a day to prove how much better I am than you."

It is like the wearing of pins and ribbons to show that you have donated to various charities. The biblical injunction, in this as with most other things, is to perform such acts in secret, so that it is known only to God. Trumpeting it in public renders the trumpeter open to accusations of being a Pharisee, and we all know what Jesus's opinion of the Pharisees was!

I'm a Christian but members of our church don't fast or give up any food for Lent. Lent isn't actually a recognised part of our calendar. I think it was invented by the Catholic church and adopted by Anglicans and some non-conformists but not all.

In our church those of us who are able to (ie, not expectant mothers or people with health problems) fast on a monthly basis just for one day (the first Sunday in the month usually) but it's probably only other church members who are aware of the fact.

Fasting can also be a personal thing used in conjunction with prayer at any time for any purpose in addition to the regular monthly fast.
