Re-Opening Blackburn Road

There is talk in the Telegraph tonight of re-opening Blackburn Road at the Railway pub as a way of easing traffic flowing through the town centre. I think we all know that Eagle Street is bad enough now without the new Tesco store. What do others think of this proposal? It seems that if they hadn't shut the town centre to traffic we might not be in the pickle we are with loss of traders to me.

Re: Re-Opening Blackburn Road

personally thought it was a bad move to close it in the first place.

Have already mentioned this in the Recession Thread 2009 Bernie:-

Plans to reopen pedestrianised Accrington street to traffic (From Lancashire Telegraph)

Just a proposal at the moment, but will be done from the million pound 'bribe' from Tesco no doubt ....

Shut or open, it should be safe, which at the moment it isn't. If it's going to remain shut, something needs doing about people who drive through it regardless.

Funny how us common people notice the violators but the powers that be don't. Wouldn't take much for a cctv camera to monitor that stretch to catch them.

Spending all day on the market you would also be suprised how many vehicles go through the bus station, even though the signs say 'Buses Only'. In fact the most prolific law breakers in that particular case are the police themselves, on non emergency duty

There is also a loading zone on Peel St, outside the cafe next to Mannings. One of the shop owners parks there all day, so whats the point of it, or more to the point who controls it.

The police have a right, emergency or not to patrol the allocated area of their shift.
These are the officers who are often called and lamblasted for not being seen.....you have seen these officers and therefore they are seen to be doing their jobs.
I think many traders would take this gesture as looking after their interests..........what say you?

Re: Re-Opening Blackburn Road

would it make a difference?the traffic is heavy coming down towards the lights so traffic coming through town would get stuck at the junction of little blackburn road and eagle street. the council are clueless but they will do it just to spend some money.

i say garbage- patrolling is one thing, actually doing owt is summat else, usually they turn up on foot on broadway when someone reports the clowns that cycle or skateboard in a pedestrian precinct, by then hey presto they have gone. useless in a town centre anywhere unless some are on foot. like permanant.

There's actually a CCTV camera on the side of the old McDonalds building, which can be rotated to point in the direction of the pedestrianised road in question. I'm sure word would soon get round if they started fining people. Heck it doesn't even need to be this sophisticated, stick a bobby there, but we all know they're too tied by red tape. I just hope nobody is hurt badly.

If their allocated area consisted of a one way street does this mean they have the right to patrol it going down the opposite way ?
