Re: Recycling/charity.
Has anyone ever wondered why we have charities? Why the government is actively promoting voluntary service?
Don’t get me wrong – I think that all the many thousands of volunteers who do stalwart work for no financial reward are the real salt of the earth but I ask – should they be needed? Obviously yes because they are here. But why do we have all the various charities?
We have charities because the public has identified a need that is not addressed by the government in office and decided to do something about it themselves rather than wait years for something to be done.
But hang on a minute we citizens pay our taxes and the government collects those taxes to tend to the population’s needs. So what has gone wrong?
If the government financed the operation of the RNLI (totally funded by public subscription) RSPCA, NSPCC, cancer research and thousands of other charitable works they wouldn’t be able to waste OUR money on projects that do not benefit the general public in this country. So when a need is identified the government drags it’s collective heels in the full knowledge that if they procrastinate for long enough we will get fed up waiting and do something about it ourselves by forming a charity and funding it through voluntary contributions.
Sadly we are our own worst enemy.
Sorry if I’ve slithered a bit off topic there but it had to be said.

Re: Recycling/charity.
We have a better understanding of whats need than some polititions so we do what we can to help. If the gov of the day puts money into a charity/project it is only for political gain not for the benifit of the people who need it. Example 8 billion to educate children in Africa when our own education system NHS etc need to be sorted to run properly. Yes a serious amount of cash has gon into the NHS yet bad management dosnt help. I have nothing against the African "investment" but should we not get our own house in order first before the gov tries to show others how its done.

I'm resting until the right film part comes along.
In the meantime have you seen your picture as a gawky fouteen year old in the Stanley section.
Back on thread, which coloured sack do my school essays, which my English master told my parents were pornographic, go in?

Re: Recycling/charity.
Front page headline from this weekend's Observer is about how we are going to be fined if we put rubbish in the wheelie bin that could be re-cycled.
I have phoned three times over the last two years asking for the relevant sacks and box, each time I've been told I'll be sent them. I'm still waiting.
I have posted about it before on here, so if they try to fine me I may have to call you as witnesses for my defence.

Re: Recycling/charity.
It has been recently reported that some councils are considering charging extra for all non-recyclable rubbish. The collection wagon would weight each bin and at the end of each month we will get a bill. The remaining councils are getting excited at the proposal and watch with interest.
Would some kind soul explain in simple language that any idiot could understand, particularly councillors, what part of the council tax is for if not for removing domestic rubbish?

Probably similar to the part of business rates that firms pay then have to pay on top for the removal of their rubbish.
If HBC did want to tackle fly tipping they would look at this again, as it is mainly small firms that are the main offenders in my opinion.

OK, I can only go off my own experience with the cardboard, they do take it. It isn't collected with any of the other recycling things though, a little caged van came round later in the afternoon for it.
Can I just suggest that you leave the cardboard out longer that day, I know it looks unsightly, I was grumbling wondering how long it was going to sit at the front of the house and thought they weren't going to remove it, but they did, and as I say it did get very late in the afternoon when the van picked it up.

Maybe you should have left it out for four days then
No I'm only joking Mick. I'm not defending them, if they didn't collect yours give them a ring and blast them. My post was directed at those who don't know it's collected seperately, because let's be honest they aren't great at letting us know this information are they!
