If your license runs out when you become 70 then I would lock all the windows and doors the night before to stop it doing so. Sorry! I couldn't resist that.
About 6 weeks prior to your 70th birthday get the right form from your post office and apply to renew your license. You will have to do the same at 73, 76 etc. I’m not sure how far it goes. You may at some time need a certificate from your doctor to confirm your fitness to drive. But I don’t know when that will be.
If you have an illness or a disability that could affect your driving ability then you need your doctor’s OK to drive.
I was expecting a renewal notice from DVLA before I turned 70 but none came. It wasn’t until a week before my 70th that I realised. So I rang them and asked them what happened to my driving license renewal application. (It was a bluff) They confirmed that they hadn’t received it (well they wouldn’t have received it because I hadn’t sent it) and told me to apply again.
“But!” I complained “how can I apply for a renewal when I do not have my original license to send in?” “It’s alright sir,” a voice replied “just put a note with the application form to explain why you are not sending both parts of your license back and it will be OK.”
About 10 days after sending in the application my new license came back and continued from where the old one left off. It is good for another 3 years.
