Retirement Villages.

For the over 60's ...

There are now growing developments for Retirement Villages. They do appear to be a decent idea ... restaurants, swimming, care facilities, community rooms, functions, etc. Can either buy or rent a property and you do have top security.

Just feels like a Butlins to me for us senior citizens somehow, and wonder if that big balloon will appear if you try to escape ? Segregation and put out to grass springs to mind.

Would miss all the varying ages passing by in my street, particularly the children.

I don't mind the idea of you being shut out of harms way so long as you no longer have a way of interfering with everyone else's reality.

I watched a programme about one such village a while back and can see the benefits for some not all people. People with debilitating illnesses for example were able to maintain their indepence whilst having back up care on site so to speak. The residents weren't forced to stay on the site, in fact quite a few were shown going out and about shopping and suchlike. I can see many benefits in them actually not least there is always company to be had if you wish to socialise.

Yes, I see that as the plus side Bernie (was only joking about 'The Prisoner' scenario .

). Some are extremely expensive to rent .. around £1,200 per month, but the new Nazereth one at Blackburn is about £600 plus according to a friend who went to look.

Just living in a community with all old people .. well, not so sure. Would need to ask lots more questions ... like is it acceptable for your family to stay with you when they come to visit.

Unlike you Less, I do see the good in most people ... naive maybe, but I do rather like that side of me

I would imagine that having people stay over wouldn't be a problem, after all it is your home. And as for living in a community of old people, a lot of them in the programme I watched had more get up and go than a lot of younger people. Being old/er is a state of mind

biggest benifit i can see is to the ruddy owners of these places another way to rob ya of yer savings.

can see why some would like em, personally they can shove em.

Where's your average OAP going to get that sort of money

They sound like expensive holiday camps - never cared much for conformity like that.
I wonder if they have a speaker system in every unit, to shout 'Hi-de-hi' every morning, just to check whether you have survived the night.

Agree Retlaw .. was talking to a customer the other day who was furnishing these places, one site only had one resident as yet..

Will be interesting to see how they fill up.

Maybe the council ones will be a lot cheaper ? They talk about extra funding to help, but no ballpark/guidance figures as yet.

There used to be 3 such places close to where I was born Kate that would have suited you perfectly. Its no wonder I am like I am now. I told you yesterday where I was born if you can remember. One is still open, one now has houses built on the site and I have no idea what happened to the 3rd.
