Revolution postponed.
Revolution in Accrington fails to take off.
Papers Past — Poverty Bay Herald — 7 November 1907 — BRITISH MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
Considering the number of seats the Socialists did win, it's suprising, reading the places where they failed, other heavily industrialised areas, why they did so badly there, and in Accrington, and in similar areas, Colne, Burnley, they achieved success.
I wonder why?
Are the people of this area too complacement, when it comes to change?
We've had a few skirmishes, with handloom weavers causing a bit of bother.
But considering the number of relatively poor textile workers in this area, we've never been that revolutionary.
Why were the Dingles wanting change, and we weren't?
Would anything make us revolt?

Re: Revolution postponed.
Its not surprising - at the 1907 election the Labour party had only existed one year.
History of socialism in Great Britain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The Labour Representation Committee was founded with Keir Hardie as its leader. At the 1900 election the LRC won only two seats, and the SDF disaffiliated, but more unions signed up.
The LRC affiliated to the Socialist International and in 1906 changed its name to Labour Party. It formed an electoral pact with the Liberals, intending to cause maximum damage to the Unionist Government in the forthcoming election. This was successful, and in the process, 29 Labour MPs were elected"

Yes, I know, but why were we slower to embrace the new 'workers party', than the downtrodden of Burnley, and Colne?

Re: Revolution postponed.
'The Poverty bay Herald'- a New Zealand newspaper from 1907?
How on earth did you dig that up and I wonder why they were interested in elections in Accrington?

Re: Revolution postponed.
Some really interesting pre-WWI local election results on here.
North East Lancashire Accrington PDivCon through time | Political Life Statistics | Political Parties
In 1906 the Socialist Democratic Federation polled nearly 5,000 votes, not far behind the Liberals, who won. Independent Labour garnered 619 votes.
Perhaps we were/are revolutionary,
It's just the lack of organisation, which hinders us

They have a much better archive there, and in Australia, especially of old newspaper clippings, than we do up here, my old pommy sport.

Well, we had the Coppice, free at that time from junk pieces of timber, so position a few troops on top of there, the authorities could see torch bearing revolutionaries coming from anywhere!

We've always been an advanced race. Don't worry about Accringtonians revolting, they more than make up for it round the town centre nowadays

Um I hear one visitor from the other side of Hadrian's Wall fled the area in fear of his life, never been seen since, terrible times those Rindi
