Right To Die?
Euthanasia is legal in the Netherlands. Some terminal illness sufferers would like to see this law passed in the UK. Do you think we all have the right to choose how and when we die, where possible? If euthanasia was legal in the UK, where would we draw the line? Would it only apply to physically ill sufferers or also those with mental disorders?

If it applied to mental illness then accyweb would end up with a membership of approximately, erm, err,
ZERO!

Re: Right To Die?
Is there not a case going on about this whole issue at the moment? It seems daft that we are allowed to put animals out of their misery and pain yet cannot do it for people. We are all animals after all.

Re: Right To Die?
That's a pickle. Actually I would support euthanasia, but when the individual can't speak out about their human rights - then if it is the humane thing to do perhaps the doctors should decide along with blessings from the family.

Re: Right To Die?
Isnt that why people do 'living wills'?
Me in one way i do agree with euthanasia and then again in another i dont. I wouldnt like to be the one who helps the person to die. I couldnt do it. I agree with it if the person is terminally ill and so ill that they know they dont want to suffer any longer. But they have to make that decision themselves. I wouldnt like to make that decision. What happens if they suddenly take a turn for the better after theyve taken the tablets or drink? Also starving people to death no thanks. I've seen someone nearly die that way and it was horrible.

Re: Right To Die?
This is such a difficult subject. We did discuss it once before and I think then we couldn't really reach a happy conclusion. It does seem ironic that we can put animals out of their misery but condemn terminally ill people to suffer even when they plead to be allowed to die. It seems cruel to me.

Re: Right To Die?
im for euthanasia, if people have to suffer and dont want to have to deal with pain minute after minute then its their life and it shouldnt be up to anyone else to say no he/she shouldnt be allowed to die,if i was in constant pain then i would hope that i had the choice,

Re: Right To Die?
I think it should be legalised, but with protection written into those legalities, to protect great Aunt Ethel from being knocked off for her cash.
Animals have more quality in this country, with Rover being taken to the vets if his quality of life is deemed intolerable, than people who wish legally to have the end off their life assisted with.
When I'm ready to leave, I'm out of here, without a backward glance.

i too think it should be legalised, animals have more rights than humans, summat wrong there.

Re: Right To Die?
People can have views on this subject, even joke about it, but until it is themselves that have to make this choice, and are faced with the inevitablity of certain painful death, will they have a true opinion on the right to choose the way to do it.
