Royal snub for sir Edmund Hillary ?
how do you folks of a certain age feel about this
Royal 'snub' over Sir Edmund Hillary funeral - Telegraph
seems the Royals wont be sending anyone , I'm of an age where the Coronation, Roger Bannisters 4 minute mile and Sir Edmund Hillary and 'sherpa' Tensing's ascent of Everest mean what 1953 was all about ......anyone else feel the same
my thoughts ......there is no reason why either Prince Philip or Prince Charles can't be there , if I was a Kiwi I would be pi**ed and probably go republican at the next referendum

Re: Royal snub for sir Edmund Hillary ?
I don't consider it a snub - just glad that we won't have to pay for any royal to fly to the other side of the world for a week in the sun.

Re: Royal snub for sir Edmund Hillary ?
Hilary was a knight but not a royal or a head of state, so under the upper crust rules he wont be 'worthy' of attendance.
If this decision causes New Zealand to go republican so much the better.

Re: Royal snub for sir Edmund Hillary ?
I think you are suffering from a bad case of homeland nostalgia.
Attitudes to the royal family have changed over the 54 years since Everest was climbed. We have a more cosmopolitan and multi-racial society here now, and a growing majority couldn't give two hoots what the royals do, (except those of us who realise we are paying them)

Re: Royal snub for sir Edmund Hillary ?
I think that the whole royal family and their hangers on should attend the funeral – and stay there.
The Kiwi government should find them a nice little island to live out their medieval lives.

There are a very large number of knights they must be laying them under the sod at a very frequent rate, the Royals shouldn't have to attend a funeral just, 'because it's there!'

Re: Royal snub for sir Edmund Hillary ?
Its a bit disrespectful for the royal family to show enough interest in someone to knight them but not enough interest to pay their respects at their funeral.
We're all expected to watch royal funerals on the telly and show sympathy.
I personally like the Royal family, particularly Prince Harry.

Re: Royal snub for sir Edmund Hillary ?
He may be only one of numerous knights but he was a Knight of the Garter and as such was one of only 24. I don't see why Charlie couldn't have managed a trip over. As for the idea that at 80 the Queen is too old for such a long trip, I bet it wouldn't put her off if she really wanted to go. I think it's a shame considering the Everest expedition was a British expedition and coincided with her coronation.
