Scale of compensation.

One of the victims of the London bombings Garri Holness, is seeking £50,000 compensation from the Government for the loss of a leg.

He has been praised for his bravery, and along with meeting Tony Blair and Michael Howard, he presented a 10,000 name petition to Downing Street calling for more compensation for the victims of 7/7. He was also due to turn on the Christmas lights in Streatham, South London.

It has since come to light that Garri Holness was convicted in 1985 of the gang rape of two sixteen year old girls. They were raped forty five times.

The man has served his sentence, but should he be entitled to £50,000 compensation?

The girls are probably still serving their sentence, and trying to live with what happened to them. The current guide for compensation for victims of gang rape is £13,000.

Re: Scale of compensation.

I know where you are coming from with the question but I venture to say that legally he is entitled to the compensation because the two situations have no connection.

Re: Scale of compensation.

Willow I agree, he's served his sentence, and as a victim is entitled to compensation. What bothers me is that he is fighting for more compensation than he is legally due.

Perhaps he could also fight for an increase in the compensation gang rape victims get.

He has changed his name since he was convicted of the crime, and at first denied it was him. He seems to be enjoying the limelight he had in the press now, as a 'brave man.'

Re: Scale of compensation.

Is this the guy who was featured on morning TV too?

The whole compensation system could do with being overhauled.

Yes he's been on TV quite a lot. He's become the unelected face of the victim's campaign for more compensation.

I'm glad to say that Lambeth Council are no longer having him turning on the Christmas lights in Streatham though.

His victims must be cringing at this whole episode.

Re: Scale of compensation.

No convicted rapist should ever be entitled to anything that others have to pay for and we all pay through our taxes. He lost a leg? Well that's tough. If there were any justice he'd have lost more than that after he committed the rapes. The punishment should fit the crime.

Re: Scale of compensation.

It seems to me that if he had been given a just sentance for his crime in the first place and made to serve it, then he would not have lost his leg in the bombings!

Perhaps there is some hidden justice there after all!

Re: Scale of compensation.

According to today's Daily Telegraph he was released after serving three years of his sentence for his part in the gang rape.

He wrongly thought because he was released early from prison, his conciction had been quashed. It wasn't until he was arrested for burglary three years ago, that he realised it wasn't quashed, and it was still on his record.

Re: Scale of compensation.

I haven't seen the family of Marie Hartley in the limelight appealing for more compensation. I'm sure they would just rather have their wife/mother/daughter back home in Oswaldtwistle with them.
