Re: School 'Bans Disabled Boy.

It's a difficult one for teachers. They need to be sensitive to individual needs or circumstances but also not make life difficult for the majority.

As a matter of fact your answer is incorrect, it's because Mothers Day is a religious event to the best of my knowledge whereas Fathers Day is a
Hallmark day :-)

Re: School 'Bans Disabled Boy.

I think teachers are to quick to be seen to be politically correct. I think the teacher should have approached the child's parent in the first instance to ask why they did not want their son to participate. If they used a little common sense they could have avoided alot of embarrasment on their part. Surely as teacher if they are going to teach about other festivals/religions, they should do some research into these other faiths other than relying on the teaching materials they receive. On the whole though I do think that it is important for children to learn and understand other religions, after all alot of the the racial problems are brought about my ignorance of other religions and their beliefs. Eveyone is entitled to their own opinions!

Re: School 'Bans Disabled Boy.

when i was at school it was perfectly alright for other faith children to opt out of christian activities (except re lessons) without question.
this situation shows a complete lack of understanding for the child in question and respect for the parent's wishes
it is yet another example of the pc brigade going too far resulting in inverted prejudice.
whilst i believe it is important to learn about all the faiths of this world i am utterly disgusted by the example of this teacher who as many, believe that they are 100% infallible and can not ever be wrong.

It's still perfectly acceptable for non-Christian pupils to opt out of Christian celebrations.

As a child at school we had assembly without fail every morning, religious instruction as a rule one hour a week. All other religions with the exception of our's, christianity and Judaism, were viewed on a par with 'Witch Doctors' preachings. Looking at the situation now I think our teachers had it right.

After reading this thread I am now of the opinion that the schooling sytem in this country needs a complete overhaul. I believe that the needs of the child should come before all this PC ballcocks that seems to have reached epidemic proportions and is ruining what should be a good time when at schools.
