Re: u r spsd 2 b in pe. cum bk str8 awy!

Aren't they going to text the parents rather than the child themselves? Isn't this just a variant on the system most schools already have of phoning the parent? It's probably quicker to send the one "your child did not show up for registration" message to multiple recipients than to phone each parent individually.

The only snag would be if, like me, you have two children at the same school.

It wasn't quite clear if it was the parent, or the child, who will be sent the text message. If it is the parent, how many will be allowed to have their mobile switched on whilst at work?

It's a bit pointless having a works phone number for parents too - they wanted Busman's but he can't get into lengthy phone calls when he's driving coach trips. Maybe they are assuming they can text all parents at home

I think most people will check their mobiles at intervals during the day Garinda. I keep mine on silent but do refer to it at lunch and, of course, can pick up messages then. No reason these days, why employers should disallow mobiles as long as they aren't near telephone systems and other specialised equipment.

I think it is a lovely idea and would save the embarrassment of the phone call at work. I would have had no problem with giving my number to the schools when my children were there .. can you reply, I wonder ?

I agree with Panther, that it isn't necessary for a child at primary to have a mobile and should be some type of age limit set for ownership.

Curious to know what happens at secondary schools now, as most pupils appear to have them .. see them texting whilst waiting for the school bus ... well, the ones that do catch the bus. Do the teachers have to ask them to 'please switch of your mobiles?' before every lesson, and do they sometimes go off in class ? Is there a penalty ?

I don't think they are actually supposed to have them at school but the teachers turn a blind eye as long as they do not disrupt the class. In fact a couple of times a teacher has borrowed my daughter's phone.

the school my sons go to allow mobiles with it being a school that most pupils only reach by bus... but they are not allowed to use them in school without permission and are supposed to be switched off (although I know mine leave their's on silent)

My mobile when i go to work is turned on silent and left in my handbag in the staffroom. The only time i look at it after that is when ive left work and im walking into Haslingden that is if i do remember otherwise its when i get home. Its been known to be left on silent until the following week when i went to turn it onto silent again for work.
