Ok ... still think beating the bark off the buggers is a lot more fun than Annexation

Re: Scottish Referendum

So Alex Salmond has set the question for the Scottish referendum, and it is to be:

Do you agree that Scotland should be an independent country?

To me this is a fudge and more like a question asked in an opinion poll.. the wording should be:

Do you want Scotland to leave the United kingdom and be totally independent
Yes/No

Re: Scottish Referendum

If he gets his own way & Scotland becomes independant, what happens to all the military bases & equipment thats in Scotland, will it all be withdrawn, planes, ships, subs, air fields, barracks, artillery, rifles, uniforms, etc, its all been paid for mostly by the English tax payer.
Can they afford to start all over with their own armed forces.

Retlaw.

They could charge us for using their land.
'Overseas' bases are common - think Guantanamo or Gibraltar.

Re: Scottish Referendum

Ya and what about the currency, who would have bailed the Royal Bank of Scotland out if the jocks had have been independent, mind you I think Salmon is thinking of keeping the pound, so no problem

Re: Scottish Referendum

It seems the whole discussion regarding Scottish Independence is descending into farce.

The SNP, the only party that wants independence, can't bring itself to ask the Scottish people to decide yet, because it feels it needs more time to get its message across.(Another way of saying it is currently losing the argument).

When the question is eventually put, the SNP doesn't want to give the people a straight yes or no vote. It wants a third option of "increased devolution". Why? No guesses at the answer to that one!

If Scotland DOES go independent, the SNP declares that it will remain in the EU. WRONG. Constitutional experts have indicated that an independent Scotland would have to reapply for membership of the EU. It would have no automatic right to membership, and would require the unanimous approval of all the other members. It would have to pass the various economic tests required, (handouts from dad don't count) and as a new member would be required to adopt the euro.

And when the Czech Republic was created from the old Czechoslovakia, it took 30 treaties and 12,000 legal agreements. The cost of all that would fall on ALL of us!

I think I've said this before, but Scotland is like a rebellious teenager stomping round their parents house declaring they are moving out and getting a place of their own.

When confronted with the costs and practicalities of moving out, they instead decide that living at home isn't so bad after all!

Like most parents we have to grin and bear it and put up with them.

Deep down, we love them to bits.
