I tried to buy some books in Smiths, and they didn't have them.

I asked if I could order them, something they've done for me before, and they said no.

I went home and ordered them online.

They obviously couldn't be bothered, and I really didn't have the patience to start lecturing them about good customer service, and that every penny you make for your employer counts.

I was suprised, as in the past the help they've given has been great.

Lots of cool little shops on warner street, walk up there and it gives a really good impression of Accy - it should be advertised more.

Smiths said exactly the same to me a fortnight ago, when i was after a cookery book fer paris, i had seen the book on smiths online @ £3-99 so i went down to purchase it, they only had the Hardback @ £15.99, so i said no,please order me the other,(had details from site) the answer was NO sorry we can't do that. i never disputed, just left the shop, never to return, went home ordered online, she had it the following day. theres loads of reasons why the towns dead, thats just one of them.

The old accy market was awful, a cold wind tunnel, with shutters that dropped down on people if the wind was in the wrong direction. Also if you had a middle stall you had to carry stock a long way. Towards the end there were more empty stalls than full. Lets not look back with rose tinted glasses.
The old market was too big and very badly designed and I seem to remember some of the concrete structure was cracking

The old market was freezing, spent many a winter day desperately trying to keep my feet warm. It was not a very nice structure and whilst I was initially disappointed when I heard they were tearing it down when I look now with the wisdom of years I think it was a good move.

Regardless of the move, the Market started to be badly mis-managed in the early 90's, where they abandoned a lot of the close management they did to ensure balance of trade on there. This forced a lot of the older market traders out and the opportunists that had been allowed in generally didn't go the distance (Toy stalls that appear in the last week of November and disappear at Christmas anyone)?

There still is bad management .... its the traders and the management... when both should work together... still pretty much them and us: it needs a big shake up or we will see the end of the market:

What clown thought... hey lets have the fish stall next to clothes... it should be food on the one side and other goods on the other.

Also most like to shop under one Warm roof ( sad but true ) maybe the credit crunch will force people back to shopping the old way... walking round and marking prices and so on

What say do the traders have ? I presumed you had to trade according to the terms and conditions of the licence ? Having just spent my first week on there I'm not in the know yet

The management sometimes offer group advertising... special events... competitions that kind of thing and they are often met with general apathy: there are a lot of internal politics... when both should be working together:
There is a big problem with the market and it needs sorting or it will go:
Also times are hard and everyone there just feels down all the time... no one seems to be making any money. I don't know what the answer is, only the other month I was thinking what would sell on Accrington Market... and I can come up with nothing: and I do know markets. To be fair its not just Accrington... but it is one of the worst.

The old outside market may have been a wind tunnel, but I counter the present one is just as windy, with even more risk of getting wet through, but there were many more stalls than there are today, and no none of them empty, again, unlike today's poor excuse for a market.

Reminds me of a time I worked in a Market in Ireland.
The Lady said "Have you got those gold pillowcases in Blue.
I replied - No but I've got the Blue ones in Gold.
She said well I'll have 4 of them then.

True Story!!
