The potted shrimps are good though.

Yuk!! can't stand potted shrimps... prefer my shellfish on the bone, and it grieves me that they're unobtainable here right next to the sea.

They are delicious Sue -I am a glutton when it comes to shellfish

I would happily become a Roman to be able to eat it for days on end (call the slave with the bucket!) bring on the Scallops, cockles, shrimps, prawns, mussels, clams, calamares alla romana and finally a dozen oysters....

Then maybe to finish of some Lobster and Champagne -not in Morecambe though (sorry), at a gorgeous little place called Sa Tuna on the Costa Brava....the grilled sardines are to die for too..... To finish off a dish of Arroz Caldosa.....

Unfortunately my Richard hates shellfish so it's nice to go to France where I can indulge in Fruits de mer - the best I had was in Reims which is not exactly close to the sea! - and he can have his favourite steak tartare which you can't get over here.

Often used to be our Saturday tea, sitting round the table picking winkles, shelling prawns, digging the meat out of crab claws or those fiddly little legs...

Cockles mussels and whelks didn't figure at home but I still love them, especially from a market stall on a little plate with pepper and vinegar.

Calamari I'd never heard of till I went to Greece in 1970 and it was a lot later before they hit the UK.

You'd think as an island nation we'd have a lot more to do with shellfish. Can't understand it. Think all we produce gets exported. Shame!!

I eat a lot of fish myself -but the Brits as a Nation don't. Monkfish used to get thrown away by fishermen in the past as it was ugly and thought inedible or just good for bait.

It's what used to get used to make "Scampi" in a basket back in the 70's when pub luches were either that or chicken in a basket....I remember the next "exotic" thing being a steak tea-cake which was called a "Steak Canadian" -wonder what Erc would make of that!!

2010 saw the Mediterranean diet crowned as World Heritage by Unesco, but 2012 won’t be the year of Neapolitan Pizza. According to a recent Unesco meeting that took place in Dubai, the only Italian candidate for the title of World Heritage in 2012 is going to be the traditional violin-making craft of Cremona, in Lombardy.

In the meantime a new museum is due to be completed by Sept. 2012 at a cost of 12 million Euros, donated by local businessman and philanthropist Giovanni Arvedi, owner of the steelworks just outside Cremona.
