From what I can gather about the underwear issue is that underwear should not be obviously visible through your uniform, hence no black bras with white uniforms. To be honest that's fair enough, black bras can look trashy under white clothing IMO
Tattoos and piercings must be covered up by your clothing. The policy does not say that you cannot have tattoos and piercings, just that they should not be visible. Again, fair enough. Many employers have those same dress codes.
The socks thing is just plain ridiculous. I see no relationship between how good a doctor or nurse is and the socks they wear. I did hear a rumour that the sock issue was based on some evidence from one of these useless studies which showed that wearers of novelty socks aren't as productive as their more seriously socked counterparts. Whoever did this alleged study has probably wasted a couple of years of their time, lots of someone else's money and is probably a novelty sock wearing layabout who wishes to stay in Uni all of their life instead of getting a real job..
