smoking me out

Why is it when u have nice weather people decide to make bonfires?

Its not bonfire night is it?

I mean theres green bins etc 4 garden waste etc.

Its just u open your window to get some fresh air/to cool down or u peg ur washing out and all is gased with smoke making everything stink . Its like being locked in a room full of smokers (the old pubs lol). Dont get me wrong I love the smell of a barbeque- thats different (sausages n all ).

Ah well at least it not like when everyone had open fires and chimney smoke etc lol.

Re: smoking me out

I get smoke from allottment fires in summer.
I once went out with a bucket of water to put one out.
The allottment holders are usually considerate and wait for wind direction to be right
but there's always one who doesn't

Re: smoking me out

It really annoys me plus I have to breathe it in.

Can u go and put them out lol? Does it have to become out of control before u call the fire services? Or if controlled do u have to keep quiet and suffocate? Why should we have to choke on the fumes?

Just I have quite a few gardens at the back of me and it seems whenever there is a sunny day its time to make a bonfire .

I didn't think the allotment holder was there - but he was - I threw the water over the fence. He appeared and I explained that smoke was filling the flats stairwell.
I asked him why he didn't position his brazier at the other end of his allotment and he said
"the smoke would damage my plants"
It wasn't long after that when an arsonist burnt out his whole allotment buildings
It wasn't me - honest
If the fire is in a house garden you might be trespassing to put it out.

Re: smoking me out

I used to love a good garden bonfire. I had a metal mesh "brazier" and I used to burn all the woody clippings and prunings that I couldn't compost. I used to get little bits of wood 6" square from our garage to get the fire going - and have my husband running out shouting, "Don't burn that, I'm saving it - it'll come in," and grabbing them back. He was like that.

This was all before the days of the Council Green Bin, where all my woody rubbish goes these days, and there were ways of going about it. I never lit a fire during the day and I always warned my neighbours if I was planning a fire. I also never lit one if it was very windy - I didn't want ash on my own window-sills, let alone the neighbours'.

I don't know why people would want to burn things now. There's so much emphasis on recycling nowadays I'd feel positively guilty if I burned anything at all.

What a pain Shillelagh .. at least the air is sorta' cleaner now than years ago, when the rain brought down the soot on your washing, and had to wash again.

There is an old bye-law somewhere about lighting fires .. somebody please google for me, can't find .. the times you are allowed to light one .. maybe Markuze you should make use of this.. Sure has been mentioned on here somewhere.

Re: smoking me out

The kids set fire to the park with great regularity in the summer months - this was the first one this year. Last year they set a fire going - got out of control and took half the hillside. Fire engines were there for a couple of hours - that scared them they didnt light another one for about 6 weeks.

Re: smoking me out

Bit off topic really but at uni we are allowed to just have random fires and barbeques on the fields on campus. I was really surprised as I thought they would be much stricter with health and safety policies, but obviously not. We even had what I consider to be a large fire in one of the bin building things but nothing changed, just posters of the ruined building reminding people to make sure fires and barbeques are controlled and fully extinguished after use and thats it!

I live at University, just like you live in Accrington. There was a fire at uni, therefore I mention it, there was a fire on burnley road or surrounding area the other day, it was mentioned.

Most people tend to talk about their homes, things they care about, places they work etc. I happen to have all those incorporated into one place. What else do you expect? I'm hardly going to talk about the local news in Accy am I when I'm 50 miles away in Lancaster.
