Some Research Is Surely A Waste Of Money
Here we are in the middle of what is claimed to be a severe recession, some claim the worst one since before WWII and yet while essential workers & tradesmen are being thrown to the wall what do we get reports of?
Stickleback is 'genius' of the fish world - Telegraph
The research was funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.
Yet another Quango, I for one, have never heard of, isn't it time all such projects were cancelled to assist with repairing our economy?

The number of times you read about things like this makes your eyes spin Less, they pay hundreds of thousands of pounds for research into stating the bleeding obvious, but I Suppose we have to keep the boffins ticking over, just in case we may, sometime in the future, find them meaningful employment, but I ain't holding my breath

I agree with that.
What about bee's they find the best source of food, then go back to the hive and show the others where it is, and how far away it is. And no quango on fancy allowances was used to discover this. Bee keepers did it. Lots of other insects perform the same way.

Re: Some Research Is Surely A Waste Of Money
The trouble is we'd have hundreds of thousands of unemployed graduates if we stopped pointless research, we need to lock them all up in a room and let them out when they've found a clean fuel that doesn't involve The Middle East

Re: Some Research Is Surely A Waste Of Money
Heard about one on CBC ... some dippy broad has been granted mega bucks to study how primates respond to being tickled ... she doesn't actually do the tickling herself; graduate students (in what I don't know) do the actual tickling ... evidently, many of the primates who are tickled become sexually aroused .... go figure, eh. Perhaps when the research is done, they will release a DVD, perhaps entitled "Horny Apes": it could be made available thru your local adult movie store .... free banana shaped dildo to the first 1000 customers

Re: Some Research Is Surely A Waste Of Money
Nothing that expands our knowledge of the world we live in is a waste of money but I agree the timing is wrong. I would imagine, though, that this reported research began long before the recession started. Unfortunately we will now probably have research, costing £millions, into the cause and effect of recessions.

Re: Some Research Is Surely A Waste Of Money
Less perhaps you could commission some research into whether research is a waste of money.

The Department Of Sensible Drinking.
Their main problem is a severe case of underfunding, only 2 months into the new financial year and they are going to have to go cap in hand to the Government because they've spent the full years grant.
