Post Re: Speed Cameras

In my opinion, speed cameras are not the solution to stopping speading.  As mentioned, people see the camera and slow down (Some brake quite hard at times) and speed up when they pass it.  The main people that the cameras are going to get are those not local to the specific area as they do not know where the cameras are, so it makes you wonder if it just a money raising alternative.

It's one thing that does annoy me with the police, why can they not pay for more officers or units rather than on high speed detection devices, etc......

Re: Speed Cameras

Gatso camera sites are decided by the police and the county council. they are supposed to be a safety measure but as we all know, a majority are placed to make money. Mobile units are money makers. I was recently fined for driving at 34.7mph after just leaving a 40 zone and going into a 30 zone. They even knew I was decreasing my speed but still did me anyway! They hide them in the back of vans and stick a little sign no bigger than 6 inch square a few metres from the van and sometimes in the dark of night so you dont know they are there! I drive to the speed limit always but i think there should be more vax systems rather than gatso, mini gatso and mobile units(ds2's)... the tss systems are a nasty piece of work too! they monitor you over a long stretch of road and calculate your speed and upload the data for processing..

Do they work in the dark?
If so which ones do and which ones don't?

Re: Speed Cameras

yeah they do... the lux level on these cameras work in extreme conditions which basically means it can compensate for any loss of light and still retrieve a clear image. the signal from the analogue signal from the camera is converted to digital then enhanced. they are currently developiing a new type of camera which will track you on a national level. Its being developed on the apnr(number plate recognition) camera system. when this camera detects you it communicates with a central server which checks for tax & insurance. They are currently working on including a check for the mot also.

Re: Speed Cameras

speed cameras are a cheap replacement for traffic police

the amount of people i see driving around with headlights not working and various other faults and stupid illigal dangerous parking etc is beyond belief

when my friends passed their tests the police would pull you over for anything that looked out of order on your car but now unless you are driving past a speed camera over the legal limit you can get away with almost any traffic infringment because there isnt the police to uphold the law and that is assuming the speed camera actualy has a film in it and not a dummy one

Re: Speed Cameras

I agree chav.. One thing to mention is that there are very few cameras which have to be serviced and reloaded. the majority of the speed cameras are now digital and are uploaded to a central server as soon as the image is recieved. This has enabled them to place more active cameras and the numbers of dummy cameras is now reducing.

Re: Speed Cameras

What about the laser ones at night? I have seen cars with lights right under the front reg plate. I would have thought that would overload the camera making it shut it iris down and not be able to see the number plate. Any thoughts?

They may have a filter to block excess light.

Re: Speed Cameras

The mobile unit emits a signal which detects a vehicle enter the wide beam. This then returns to the unit and verifies the speed on which then decides if an image is required the gets ready for the next scan. No lights or other devices can interupt the signal due to the wide beam. The only way the beam can give misleading information is if there are two cars driving parallel to each other and the system checks for this. The system also has built in apnr which stores the full car image in high detail and the driver is clearly visable in any environment. The camera has a zero lux rating which basically means it can see clearly in the dark no matter how dark it is.

If you need to know more about the mobile camera that we use in this country here is the link..

Re: Speed Cameras

the radar unit dosent use any sort of optical lense its like a mini satelite dish that points at the path of the moving vehicle. this sends and recieves signal which it uses to calculate.

Re: Speed Cameras

just a footnote

anyone who uses tom tom devices and got the free speed camera location package which alerts you to where they are the database is drasticly out of date and will not notify youof 3 speed cameras in accrington alone that i know of

download and install the FREE speed camera database which also alerts you to known hiding spots used by the police and cameras that are on traffic lights

i will post the link when i find it again

edit:

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetycameras.php

kept upto date monthly
