BBC News - 'First Irish case' of death by spontaneous combustion

A 76 year old man from Galway Ireland died on the 22nd Dec last year, the coroner has put his death down to Spontaneous Human combustion. The police investigating the incident couldn't find any signs of foul play or any accelerants surrounding the death of Michael Faherty

I thought QED had debunked the idea of SHC last century. Basically the fat in the body is the accelerant, clothes act as the wick, there is some other incapacitating factor (heart attack etc) and the fire is started by an external factor such as a spark from an open fire.

Agreed.

The fact he was found with his head very near an open fire, speaks volumes.

There's always been something that could have been an ignition source.

Usually a cigarette, in most suspected cases of SHC.

I wonder if the amount of potcheen he'd consumed was taken into account
