Street lighting
Return of the blackout: Crime fear as councils switch off streetlights to save the planet | the Daily Mail
Can you imagine if Lancashire did this round here. I'd probably be ok with the street lights as im on a main road but what about the new estates they are putting up, on the steets that arent anywhere near main roads would they turn the lights off there.
Hope lancashire dont.
Just think of what fun the vandals and the burglars will have. Cctv would have to be infrared otherwise it would be no good, speed cameras exactly the same.

Re: Street lighting
They debated this down here in Warwickshire, most of the borough did seperately, North Warwicks, Nuneaton, rugby, and all voted against it. It was decided it was too dangerous and would be unpopular. The council is risking claims if properties get broken into, there's accidents with people or even cars.
We did of course have lights that went out at 12 and came back on at 6 up until about 15 years ago. They all eventually got photocells put on which replaced the timers and thus the need to go round twice a year and reset the clocks.

It's probably not right good for a bloke on his own to be there, never mind a woman or young lass

Re: Street lighting
I totally disagree with the idea of switching lights off in towns/villages and rural "A" roads, but I have long held the opinion that alternate Motorway lights should be switched off during part of the night.
Many stretches of motorway have no lights at all so why can't timer switches be fitted to turn every other light off on the stretches that ARE illuminated?

Re: Street lighting
To be honest busman I dont understand why motorway junctions are lit other than at the top of slip roads. Many of them aren't at all, as you know, and then some are lit for miles before and after a junction.
On the carbon emissions point, Our Aldi and co-op, Asda, and Sainsbury's all leave the store and car park lights on at night regardless of whether they're open or not, all night.

Re: Street lighting
Screw the emissions and leave the lights alone. As far as motorways go they should all be lit. It is always nice to come out of the dark and into a lit stretch of motorway. I don't buy into all this energy saving nonsense. We need more energy not less, its time to crank up the nuclear power stations so we can use as much as we like.
There is too much bull talked about greener alternatives to everything without the downsides mentioned. Like energy saving lamps that need treating as special waste due to their contents. How much energy is consumed recycling the damn things so we dont poison the earth by land filling them?
Talking about landfill, why are they on about charging y weight our non recyclable waste? We fill landfill by volume not weight so surely we should be charged by volume. If I fill my bin up with polystyrene balls why should the charge be less than filling it will bricks? Makes no sense to me. If fact filling it with bricks would be less polluting to the earth than the polystyrene.
Anyway enough green bull, just leave the lights switched on. Everyone can see what will happen if they turn off the street lights on streets with houses. Everyone will fit outside lights to deter the burglars. End effect no saving in energy.
