Sad news indeed, although as I said on another thread, at 89 it was a good innings and he has left behind a legacy that will live on for years to come.

Favourite Bergman film? Well I suppose The Seventh Seal or Fanny and Alexander (4 Oscars) will be the ones most people will be familiar with, but for me it's a tie between Wild Strawberries and Persona.

Bergman's films could be terribly depressing, but I always felt uplifted by them. RIP Ingmar. Checkmate at last.

He was a true genius of cinema, and his films helped bring European films to a world wide audience.

My favourite Bergman film was Fanny and Alexander, closely followed by The Passion of Anna.

Seems to be a bad week for great filmmakers. Michelangelo Antonioni has also died, aged 94.

The first time I saw L'Avventura I didn't know what was going on, if anything. Took me a while, but when I saw it again it blew me away.

RIP
