Take your Life in yer Hands.
Have just had the Dubious Pleasure of going down Accy Centre fer some shopping, Whilst i noticed that outside our Town Hall has been Gritted/Cleared, obviously so our mayor will not slip on his ass, Broadway, n Between to Peel street, n around the market etc is a deathtrap, so shoppers etc can go ahead n break whatever limb takes yer fancy, which i have no doubt "WILL" happen to some unfortunate soul. WHY as that area NOT been made safe? i am led to think "Pavements" are the responsibility of our "A" listed local council? is this the case? i would urge any poor sod that falls n injures themselves, to take advice about sueing the responsible party. unfortunately i only "Nearly" fell on me ass, or the first law suit would already be in motion. "A" listed council? ya gotta be joking.

not at all suprised, seems the "Mayor" is much more important than the shoppers! then they wonder why the shopping centres gone down the pan.

Re: Take your Life in yer Hands.
Not been to town but if its anything like the rest of the pavements then it's very very dangerous. You make a good point on the town centre shoppers cashy, Asda have gritted to prevent people slipping, the same should be done in our town centre!

Re: Take your Life in yer Hands.
gritt bins are not been refilled either and there has been talk of fitting locks and dedicating a selected person to have a key and be incharge of dispersing gritt from them so you can imagine what sort of jobs worth is going to get the key and be in charge of dishing it out
not once has a gritter been around teh whalley road area despite residents ringing and asking for it to be done especially over teh xmas period when it fell really heavy and i dare say most of accrington hasnt been gritted either ( unless in a higher paying council tax band)
like i have said in another post people are noticing that gritters are been sent out for show to appear to be doing somthing but all they are doing is just flashing the flashy lights but not actually dispersing gritt even though its pretty clear where they are desperatly needs it
it may be a matter of cost but that is no excuse due to how much councils waste each year on pointless endevours they shoudl ensure theres enough in teh kitty to pay for things liek gritt especially after teh fiasco of a nationwaide shortage early 2009.
i hope they get a flood of lawsuits it may teach them its cheaper to pay for teh gritt in future
accy town center is a death trap when it has merely rained and anyone with an ounce of common sense would know that ice ontop of what broadway especially is like shoudl be gritted but not to worry the town hall is accessable they cant have people slipping beofre they pay their council tax bill can they

According to the council road sweeper ( why they sent him out I don't know) there is no grit
Shame they don't call an election today, lets see how much gets gritted when they need to get out and about canvassing

Re: Take your Life in yer Hands.
Just got back from town and got to agree it is lethal underfoot. Funnily enough there are now about four blokes breaking the ice up on Union Street and clearing a safe path.

Just been talking to a neighbour ... they had been into town ... parked up on Union Street. His wife fell down with a thump within 30 yards of the car .. luckily she wasn't hurt. Plenty of help from the PCSO's, etc., but think prevention better than cure now.
Mind you, Pickup Street pavements in Clayton has not been gritted .. and this is our main walkway for shoppers. Would think that, at least, the shopkeepers e.g. the Co-op would make an effort to clear it to their door ... used to do in the past. Think there is some sort of legal implication these days though.

Re: Take your Life in yer Hands.
News : Winter maintenance update - 30 December 2009
if you have a read of that .. it will tell you that lancashire county council are not refilling the grit bins ..
As the freezing conditions continue the county council crews are working solely to keep the ‘main’ roads salted and free of ice and snow. This means resources are being targeted towards salting of all A and B roads as well as other main roads that help keep traffic moving around the county and the policy of not filling grit bins or treating secondary roads will continue for the time being. The council has enough salt to continue to respond to the conditions over the New Year period.
now they havent issued another press release since .. that was on 30th december ... i wonder why?

Run out of ink?
The ink has frozen in the printer?
Not enough salt to put in the ink to prevent freezing because it is neither an A or a B road?
To tell the truth I don't know.

What sort of legal implications ? Is it not enough that most of the staff who work in the shop pay council tax and the Co-op pay business council tax that the council can sit on their hands in the warmth of the town hall. scaitcliffe house/ any other luxury apartment, and wait while everybody does their work for them
We even have to pay the Water Board for OUR rainwater to go from the pavements to the drains. Yes according to the Water Board it's OUR rainwater. On that basis presumably the council think it's OUR snow

I don't think the policy has change since that statement. The old policy was to grit the main roads, then the bus routes, and then depending on resources, other areas.
The policy on not refilling the grit bins in my view is a a mistake. And why the town centre hadn't been done at lot earlier is a mystery.Broadway, Peel St etc should have been treated as a priority on the grounds of public safety.
We have had snow in the past, and coped reasonably well. I don't think the County's policy is right, it's just to inflexible. And maybe that's were part of the problem is.
