Re: tales told by parents.

There was a "tale" about "old bob's" (the alleyway inbetween gatty and milnshaw)
Not too sure if it was a tale tho or if I was just too young to understand
I'm not even too sure what was said about it
So I'm pretty useless really lol

My parents would never have told me tales like this and I, in turn, to my children. Just warnings of the human variety that could be lurking.

Wouldn't have believed them anyway, always had my head screwed on between fact and fiction. ..

Not quite the same Emamum, that is a to allay his fears; not scare him into good behaviour.

My wife was from southern Ireland, when my two children were coming to the age that they would believe 'owt, I told them that I had rescued their Mum from living in a cave where she was hiding from dragons.

Oh, how disappointed they were when they found that she came from an ordinary house, "just like what we live in Dad!".

Re: tales told by parents.

I remember being told one about creatures whose feet were backwards .... they were supposed to lurk in the paint works yard on Rishton Rd. in Clayton.

The one that scared me most had nothing to do with monsters: my gran told me that when I had a bump on my head, I had to have a bandage on it. And under the bandage, and over the bump was an old penny. My gran said that if the bandage was taken off and the penny moved, the bump would explode. Maybe it was a trick to get me not to take and spend the penny ... in those days, a penny was worth something. A one way train ride from Accy to Ossy was only three halfpence.

Hee hee.....Jenny Greenteeth!

I remember being told about her.....she would come up through the grate in the street, wrap her long arms around you, sink her big green teeth into your flesh and drag you down into the sewer.

Re: tales told by parents.

My parents never scared me into being well-behaved but when I was very small my 2nd big brother used to frighten the life out of me with his "Pendle Witches" tales. We could see Pendle Hill very clearly from the back bedrooms of our house and he used to tell me that "Old Mother Demdyke" made regular sorties out over Whalley, Harwood and into West End - on her broomstick - and would swoop into my room if the window was left open. I believed him and sweated my way through many a Summer night in case she did.

He also told me tales about horrific murders by the Twenty Steps (beside the railway bridge over Blackburn Rd. near Blythe's). I always thought of that spot with horror and, even though it's ridiculous, I still do.

The odd thing is, I'm very close to that brother. He may have teased me but we were, and still are, "muckers".

Re: tales told by parents.

I remember my mum telling me the story or a ghost train going through the miley tunnel in preston we used to live right next to the railway, i often went over the fence to pick flowers and blackberrys and the railway is supposed to be disused well i kacked my pants when i was over the fence and a flipping train came!! (ghost train or coal train!) the line was still used to transport coal at that time, come to think of it why did i never see or hear the train before or after then when i was trying so hard to get over that tall fence im surprised i didnt do myself a mischief! lol

There was the story of a boy that went in kicking a footy and came out kicking a head in fact a few storys come to mind!

Needless to say i still went down through the miley tunnel but that was when i was about 19 years old and yes it was scary, google for it you can see pictures and you tube video!
