Teen & Child Hit With Firework.. (Accrington Observer)

Well I must say, how pathetic. Really annoys me, some people are just there to moan moan moan. If theres something to complain about these days, you bet it'll be complained about.

ORANGE DUST on a girls coat & jumper!? How very sympathetic I am.

Have some people just got nothing better to do with their time than moan to the Observer, complaining that a firework gone wrong resulted in their child's coat being showered with orange dust? I mean cmon'.. its pathetic. As for the girl who was 'hit on the head' and astonishingly gave her a headache, yet no external visible injuries.. what a coincidence.

So the families of both are now calling for extra safety measures, which basically means if they take their cases further, future Christmas Lights Firework Displays at Accrington will no longer be.. its bound to happen, someone moans, and due to 'health & safety' they will cancel them in future.

Another thing to consider, we cannot blame someone for a 'stray' firework.. no-one can control what a firework is going to do or where it is going to go once it is fired in the air.. with all the safety measures there could possibly be, something could still go wrong! All I have to say, is if you're visiting a public firework display, you do so with the knowledge & understanding that as these 'explosives' are being fired into the air, something could go wrong! So therefore you watch at your own risk! Only makes sense!

Samantha was in my history class at college last year. She was a bit of a moaner but I think they have a good point about the safety issue. What if it had blown up in her or the little girls face?

People might refer to them as moaners, but if it had hit you or your child in the face I can ensure that you would kick up a fuss about it, even if it was luckily just orange dust and small marks.

They wont get rid of the firework display, because I assume it brings money to the town and looks good for the council and whatever to have all the activities going on, and they wouldnt want to lose everyone to Blackburns switch on.

I agree with you. I bet compensation has crossed her mind. Whilst on the subject of the Accy Observer there is another brilliant letter on the letters page. Someone is explaining how Accrington's shopkeepers can increase their trade by having shop dorways big enough to fit double buggys in. In my experience the people who push double buggys about are the last people you want in your shop. I estimate it would cost me £3000 to convert my shop. How many packets of fags and cans of 8 Ace would I have to sell to recoup that.

They said they were stood outside B&M Bargains. Was that an official viewing point because the police seemed to have closed the street off at it's junction with Broadway at the other end. Suprised they let anyone stand down there ?

Double buggies are a fairly recent invention.
Who has 2 children at one time both incapable of walking
unless they are twins?

We usually stand on Whalley Road opposite the vets, there's a good view but you're usually far enough away not to get any debris flying at you although last year cos it was really windy, even that far away there were bits of charred paper & sparks flying around - as someone has already said you just have to be aware that things like this can happen & be as careful as you can. (That said I watched them, from the warmth & safety of my own doorway). Really don't think they should have made such a fuss over it.

a toddler of upto 3 would still require its hand held or baby reins, so a double buggy is appropriate in quite alot of circumstances.

At the age of 3 -I was in school -- not nursery school --full time school!!!!

If attending a firework and bonfire display, surely the recommended attire would be wellies, a wax coat and a hat, a bit of ornge dust would do no harm to these, or am I wrong in assuming that the people concerned went with light coloured clothes, which are quite likely to get dirty!

Like someone else has said, you go to these events knowing that something can go wrong and obviously the closer you are the more chance there is, surely if it was that bad the people involved would have gone to hospital not the local paper?

There's 3 years age difference between my two girls and I never needed a double buggy. By the time the second one was born the first one was walking and holding the handle of the pram, connected to me by a wrist strap.

I have a double buggy, thankyou very much!! why would you not want me in your shop?? people with twins, children that are close together and childminders push double buggies what is wrong with us that says you dont want us in your shop?

I think we digress slightly, but have to agree that double buggies are better even for children 2 - 3 years apart, they are under control, and mum/childminder isn't under any pressure, if it is a toss up between getting these in the shop, and some of the children that come in under no such control and wreck the place, I know who i'd prefer! Besides, if the world wasn't the place it has become, people would be able to leave double buggies outside, like they used to do, without the fear of theft...of the children!
