Television .. 'not that I watch it much'
Have you noticed how many people smugly state that they don't watch television much as if this is a non-intellectual pastime for the rest of us minions. Almost apologetic if they happen to catch a glance of something.
Sorry Mani, felt this came out a little in your excellent thread re. the 'Corrie trash' thing ..."not that I watch it much" ..Ok I await to be berated.

Re: Television .. 'not that I watch it much'
TV watching can be as intellectual as you want it to be...or it can be pure entertainment. I truly do not watch much TV..... but only because hubby keeps a firm grip on the remote control. His taste in entertainment sucks!
I prefer the computer anyway.

I don't watch telly much either, purely because I don't have the time with shiftwork and university projects. When I have time off I do like the occasional glimpse of Corrie, I taped Lost religiously and I also watch ER but that's about it since Sex and the City finished...

Yes, I, too, like E.R.......and I do watch that sometimes on the TV upstairs.
I think I like it because it is true to life and doesn't paint the medical profession as 'Angels'.

Re: Television .. 'not that I watch it much'
I say I don't watch much tv because I don't watch much tv, I only watch lost as a rule, I find my pc far more interesting. It's just a matter of what you find interesting, and how you choose to spend your time. It is after all just a recreational pass time.

Re: Television .. 'not that I watch it much'
Don't have a TV at all, so don't watch it. But that doesn't make me a moral majority. I just don't want one enough. I have had TVs, even had one in the kitchen once so that I wouldn't miss Corrie and The Bill whilst cooking. I don't miss it particularly, the only things I miss are the news and the weather, and I can get those from the newspaper. It has its advantages, we have dinner together every night at the table and talk, and we both like to read. I really don't understand, though, this attitude of "I've got a TV but I don't watch it much" - meaning that makes me a better person? No, it just makes you a person that doesn't watch TV much!

Re: Television .. 'not that I watch it much'
There's so much rubbish on TV at the moment - even a telly addict like me doesn't watch too much TV nowadays. I've completely weaned myself off soaps!
The people who actually decide what goes out on TV can't watch TV too much - or else they'd put something half decent on!
My favourite at the moment is Scrubs - I had to find a replacement when Friends was gone - & Joey certainly isn't good enough to replace it!

Re: Television .. 'not that I watch it much'
Anyway, what i wanna know is how is that big guy on lost ever going to get down that long deep hatch with the ladder up it.???Thats about as interesting tv ever gets to me these days.
I don't think it's saying they're better, i think they're just saying that they don't think whats on is worth watching and that their judgement of whats decent is better than the people who put it on.
A good film is by far better than the rubbish they put on.

Re: Television .. 'not that I watch it much'
I watch rubbish and admit it. For me, TV is something that I don't want to have to think about whilst I'm watching it. I watch a couple of hours most nights and it helps me unwind and relax (except for episodes of Lost that had my heart beating overtime).
I am fairly selective about what I watch though and at the moment that includes Lost (just finished), ER (just started), House, Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis and of course, Celebrity Big Brother at the moment. I never tape a programme so if I miss it or it clashes with another programme I miss it and don't bother about it.
I don't commit to soaps at all.
Oh, and I love a good film at the weekend.

Re: Television .. 'not that I watch it much'
I watch things I'm interested in. At the mo there are two things I want to watch on Monday evenings, Paul McKenna and Life on Mars. They are both on at the same time so I record one and watch one. Some evenings there's nothing I'm interested in so I don't watch anything.

Re: Television .. 'not that I watch it much'
There is some absolute dross on the television, some of which I like. Quality is all subjective I suppose.
Tonight on Channel 5 I watched one of the best programmes I've ever seen in my life.
'A Gangster's Funeral' was a programme by investigative journalist Donal MacIntyre. It was three years in the making, and was about the death of the brother of the Godfather of the Manchester underworld Domonic Noonan.
He's a gay, Urdu speaking convicted, murderer, who was shown being found not guilty at two trials at Preston Crown Court for kidnapping and torture, crimes he more or less he admitted to on camera that he had done, by smiling when asked if he had anything to do with it. The two trials cost over five million pounds.
The access allowed by this Manchester mafia family was shocking. His eleven year old son was interviewed as well as his nineteen year old protege. This programme made the gritty reality of Shameless look like The Archers.
Noonan's brothers funeral was attended by three thousand people and saw a Motorway closed, as well as two schools in the area. The horse drawn carriage was followed by thirty limosines, and was broadcast to the masses who couldn't get in the church.
The camera work and filming were excellent, more akin to a movie in it's atristry.
Yes there is some rubbish on the box, but tonight the licence fee for me has been justified.
By the way at the end of the programme he was jailed for sixteen years for gun crimes, of which he'll serve three and a half.

Re: Television .. 'not that I watch it much'
I don't tend to watch much tele these days, to busy with either my the internet or footie.
I go through stages, I love BB and have to watch every episode, and I like Corrie and Enders, but would rather be out and about with friends or trying to make some new ones.
