The EU supports hanging....
....of Arbroath Smokies. As part of the EU Protected Food Name Scheme Arbroath Smokies must be produced in the town of Arbroath and hung over a triangular length of wood to smoke.
Are there any other foods you would like to see protected by the EU. For example, Lancashire Hotpot?

Yorkshire tea - must be grown, picked and dried within a 5 mile radius from the center of Harrogate.

What about pontefract cakes, first they are not made in pontefract exclusively (although they originaly were) and secondly they are not cakes.

Re: The EU supports hanging....
I think Vimto should definitely be on the protected list.
Probably Dandelion and Burdock too...

Vimto is a brandname and protected by copyright law.
Dandelions and burdock plants grow throughout Europe it is not feasible to limit the description of the beverage to the UK.
The use of placenames for products produced elsewhere is the subject of this thread.
The example of Cheddar cheese produced in New Zealand shows how the use of placenames is exploited.
I really don't care what it is called as long as it is wholesome and edible.

Re: The EU supports hanging....
"Parmesan" which is sold all over the world is not the original Parmigiano Reggiano which has the DOP mark which is the EU protected origin stamp here.
You can't beat proper cheese and not the industrially plastic packed stuff...
As a drink I've only ever found Dandelion and Burdock "Up north" - it was a serious suggestion, Vimto was not (although i like it!)

I'm with Eric in his suggestion and Di has a point in that both those drinks are firmly associated with the north.
Not sure Margaret is right when she says The use of placenames for products produced elsewhere is the subject of this thread. but if we're talking regional products here what about Lancashire cheese? So far it hasn't travelled but who's to say what may happen if some big dairy gets their hands on it?
As for Lancs hotpot - had a ready meal one from Morrison's recently supposedly prepared to the recipe of local chef Nigel Haworth who says This is the exact recipe I use for all my hotpots, whether I’m making them at home for my family or at the restaurant. Well it wasn't a patch on my homemade and Margaret P has written a whole blog about it, and I don't see how you could protect the staus of that - it's a dish that many people make at home, not an ingredient.
