The Mind Boggles!
The Lib Dem Council of Richmond, London has come up with a scheme to counter carbon emissions from vehicles that if implemented will, I have no doubt, be copied by local authorities nationwide.
The scheme? Increase the cost of parking permits three fold for “gas guzzling” vehicles down to no charge for electric cars.
I suppose that the irony of such a scheme has escaped the bright spark that thought it up but just how much carbon does a parked vehicle emit? Would “NIL” be a clue? I accept that in order to reach the parking place a vehicle would have to move and thus emit carbon emissions in doing so, but once it is parked and the engine is turned off there are no emissions.
It is bad enough having to pay for an on road parking permit to park in front of your own house but this hair brained scheme really is taking the Mickey out of motorists.

Re: The Mind Boggles!
Not very detailed.
What sort of parking permits?
Resident ones?
Have you a link so we can see the story?

Re: The Mind Boggles!
Sounds a good idea. I'd make them pay more road tax as well.
Richmond is full of yummy Mummies driving their little darlings a short way to school.

Re: The Mind Boggles!
OK garinda you think that it is a good idea for Richmond. Fair enough.
But how would you react if it was your council that brought in such a scheme?

Re: The Mind Boggles!
I still think the Government should either put a limit on engine size or, and this is probably better, should limit the quantity of CO2 that a vehicle is allowed to emit per mile. That would force manufacturers to make cars more efficent and therefore 'greener'.

I have a tiny so car I'd be laughing. I've lived in a part of London which had resident's parking, and we the residents loved it, and didn't mind paying because of the benefits it brought us.

Re: The Mind Boggles!
A tad off topic Neil although your post is sort of loosely related. However I have to agree with you that the issue of carbon emissions from vehicles is not being tackled in the right way.
I’m ecstatic for you garinda but what about your neighbours? Or is it a case of “pull up the ladder Jack, I’m inboard”?
I can accept the need for having a permit for on road parking in front of your own home in crowded cities so that when you come home from work you have somewhere to park. I also accept that to administer such a scheme it costs money, so the permits have to be paid for by the user. But this latest crackpot idea is absolutely ludicrous.

Richmond is a relatively wealthy suburb, in of one of the most populated cities in the world.
Happily my neighbours care about the environment, and don't drive gas guzzling 4x4s just to take their little darlings the short walk away to school.

If they don't want to pay the fees they could change cars.

Sounds like an excellent suggestion.

I don't think they were that jealous of me and my fabulous London life.
