I do share many of your political views, particularly about the (supposi)tories ... but we all know "oil" was the bottom line; so, the thread is a tad redundant.

He doesn't need to. The UK government has a policy of non-intervention in Syria, other than trade embargoes. Cmonstanley should move there - I am quite sure he will get all the support he needs from Assad to rant against misplaced western imperialist policy. But not only that, he could set up a branch of the Stanley supporters club. I'm quite sure there is not yet a Damascus branch so he could be the chairman of that in between machine-gunning some of the local demonstrators.
