Re: The Tories
Seeing Ed Milliband was the Secretary of State for energy... Under Gordon \Brown's last government right at the time that EDF, a French Company, bought our Nuclear Power company, British Power and did nothing at all to try to stop this, I very much doubt he will be able to do anything.

No chance Neil!
They could never afford to re-nationalize them.
As for price fixing- The Germans and French have laws which prevent foreign companies taking over essential industries-gas, electric, water etc,.
We don't, so of our 10 major power companies 3 are French, 2 German,1 Spanish,1 Russian ,1 Australian.
Just 2 are UK owned-British Gas and Scottish and Southern and the latter will be foreign owned if the Scots go independent.
The German and French governments have major ownership in their power companies so our Eddie will be fighting foreign companies part owned by foreign governments as well as (probably) the EU. Why should they listen to or obey him?
They'll withhold all new investment 'till he backs off, they'll put prices up before the elections so they're on the right side, just for chance he gets in and tries it, so we'll all be worse off immediately.
Also what if he managed it and there was a major conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else even- prices would shoot up. Would he let the suppliers go bust or shut off supplies to the UK or would he give them taxpayers money?
He didn't seem to know when asked that on the Today program.
So just another soundbite for effect.

Gordon Labour have always talked the talk but never walked the walk, no matter where they raise their ugly mushes, would anybody buy a used car from snake oil salesmen like Millipede and Bowlsup, one look would put anybody off forever

Re: The Tories
he says ofgem would be getting the bullet and a more robust organisation with powers would take its place so your barking up the wrong tree lol. if only we could nationalise the utilities it would create substantial revenue, I wouldn't renew the franchises on the railways once they had run out, that would be the way to re-nationalise the railways.. plus I would build all new rolling stock in Britain because we need to start building things in this country not just assembling.

Re: The Tories
the panic in the usual tories, the energy companies and sky news who have a conflict in interest as they are financed by the shareholder market is laughable . so the status quo is the answer.

Haven't you said all this before? Haven't others shot you down in flames?
I've never liked the Tories, but by heck if it was a choice between your type of Labour...
I think I'd vote Tory.

Taking on the big 5 energy companies is no bad thing, anything that attacks their blatant market manipulation gets my vote. And who can disagree? As Ed says "Britain can do better than this"

Re: The Tories
I'm all for a regulatory body with real power- if wholesale prices go up we pay more proportionally, but if they go down we immediately pay less proportionally.
If he does that-fair enough. If the ConDems don't do that during this parliament- shame on them

Good idea, it is warm to think that the last time Labour were in power they did what they could to stem the damage done by the Tories, things like PFI, Renationalising the energy companies, Rail companies looking after our armed forces and injured servicemen and women, not being drawn into wars by the USA. Oh hang on............

Re: The Tories
that's because your politically inept . this isn't the last government this is change in the labour party which I said was happening how can you criticise when you don't know what is happening in the labour party . the tories are trying to force firemen to work till they are 60 before they get a pension but what 60 year old will pass the fitness test . they are more interested in wasting money taking Europe to court protecting the bankers bonuses.

they can shoot me down in flames but the tories say we need to save money they are doing the opposite by selling the great British institutions down the river proud to be British they say they have a funny way of showing it. shares are going down ha ha keep them going down and the government will be able to buy all the shares up.. remember all the gasworks, yes the private firms shut them all down they are the ones who created the mess we are in as ed says build up the skill base start building thing yes the tories are running scared .bring it on if their energy firms create blackouts they should be done for treason, and be repossessed.

Re: The Tories
it will be up to the employers so how could you blame the government, anyway what 17 year old from a member state falls into the criteria of an apprentice most will go through jobcentre plus and connexions which work with the schools.
