Isn't it funny that for years after Labour leave office there's always huge financial problems to sort out, 1970, 1979, 2010, the only problem is the longer Labour are in power the bigger the financial mess there is to clean up

Is that just your impression, or do you have links to statistics that show that?

Often so called 'facts' are proved to be fiction - it is sad that some people accept 'facts' without question.

I'd like to give thanks to my old chemistry master Mr. Ingham.
For furnishing me with the technical know how to uncover the facts of this sad case, and for teaching me that wild speculation is more than often useless.

Immigration went up by 20% this year.. in the same peroid jobs available went down by 18%.. public sector jobs went down by 110,000...the higest unemployment since the late 80's..you and plenty of others here seem to have the attitude that it's a simplle matter of cutting costs and it will all turn out well in the end.. wake up.

And it's funny that with every Tory government we have riots, strikes, high unemployment, high inflation, the NHS left in tatters, cuts in defence and police.. cuts in anything that dares to be called "public".. I know what I'd rather have and so did the majority that voted against the Tories 18 months ago... you lot can live in your made up world were this lot can't do a thing wrong.. carry on .

Re: The Tories
Which government was it that actively encouraged immigration...regardless of the concerns of the electorate?
Which government lost countless asylum seekers by failing to track where they were?
Which government thought that marriage was outmoded?
The riots you talk of, were a symptom of the general moral decline, encouraged by Tony Blair and his cohorts.
Work ethics were not encouraged, but reliance on benefits was........ The thought was that if you make people reliant on you for hand outs they will vote for you. Wasn't that a bit sly....almost paying for votes.
The last government were a shambles and left the country in dire straits because of their failure to listen to the electorate.
This does not mean that I feel in agreement with everything the coalition government is doing.
I really don't care about what persuasion the governemnt is as long as they can sort out the mess left by the last incumbents.
New Labour are not socialist as the original Labour party were....they were as close to being tory as it is possible to be, without actually calling themselves tory....but because they kept Labour in the name they retained Old Labour voters....again another sly Tony Blair trick.

Quite right, I can never understand why committed Tories or Labourites think it's such a good thing that their party should be permanently in power. If the Tories had been in the driving seat for the last hundred years, there'd be no welfare state, no NHS and the majority of the population would be working in terrible conditions and living in poverty. If Labour had been there for a similar length of time, we'd be living in some sort of drab, Soviet-style socialist police state. There may not be a lot of difference between the parties these days, but I'd prefer to keep the pendulum of government swinging!

So James Callaghan was a Tory was he?
I always thought he was old labour myself.
