The view from Space

I came across this the other day, courtesy of the European Space Agency and their Envosat.

This is a picture of our beautiful county, taken in 2002 from the icy wastes of space (low earth orbit) You are all down there...somewhere.

No. Don't thank me. I do this as a public service.

I am shocked to be able to see the illegal cocklers in the middle of Morecambe Bay, working so far from the safe paths.

Re: The view from Space

Makes me cry to see such a beautiful sight, pity we don’t respect it in the way we should. I find it interesting to compare the shift in the coast line from the maps of the past. Fantastic picture Bob….more please.

Re: The view from Space

Interesting to see how far the sea goes out at Southport, by my measurments it looks like 79 miles.

Perhaps they should extend the pier.

Re: The view from Space

I thought the lighter areas in the sea at the coast was polution, never realising how shallow it realy is.

Errrmmmm....well it would be, wouldn't it. Photographing the same object from the same relative position tends to result in images that are... roughly similar.

The light blue areas around the Fylde coast are the result of waterborne sediments from the Lune, Mersey and our own lovely Ribble. For reasons best known to itself it is unusually fine, which accounts for the watery coffee colour of the sea at Blackpool.

As I child, Blackpool was my only experience of the sea until my parents took me to Anglesey when I was ten, I was shocked to discover that the sea was actually clear and that you could see to the bottom of it - in the shallow bits, obviously.

If anyone likes this sort of photograph take a look at the NASA site:
