The whole process is much more complicated than big omnipotent man with big beard making mummy and daddy particles give birth to lots of baby particles and calling it our universe. There is the whole issue of dark matter and it's power that scientists will look into using the data provided from today. I for one am really excited about what happened today. Hopefully people of this generation will react to this like people of past generations reacted to the first moon landing; by way of inspiring new generations of scientists who are eager to find out about our universe and provide us with answers. I hope for a new age of reason and rationality, and for people to believe in science rather than stories of miracles and sacrificed goats.
The issue of dark matter may not be all that controversial. Neutrinos could account for it ... the massive kind that is. And if they do, then this may be the mass that is needed for a "closed" universe theory to make sense. Perhaps you could spend some time looking into neutrino research, particularly the SNO in Canada. This is more productive than ridiculing the beliefs of others.

I'm not much of a theoretical physicist (but I do play darts with one if that counts) but if the "god" particle exists then it means that Einstein's unified field theory works. This would make sense of "god doesn't play dice." I find it interesting that there are certain patterns in the universe esp. in terms of the speed of light, gravity and magnetism that could be used to argue intelligent design. So, religion is not dead; and this experiment will not kill it, nor is it designed to. Maybe I'll head down to the pub, grab a beer, and throw some darts with a tipsy scientist.

So in your book it is socially acceptable to ridicule beliefs in Aztec sacrifices and the Flying Spaghetti Monster but considered rude to state that stories of Creation are clearly absurd?

You leave the Flying Spaghetti Monster out of this. He can unleash a hail of deadly meatballs on us at a moment's notice if unbelievers take his name in vain!

Re: The World Will Not End Tomorrow

It's funny how people can so readily ridicule and dismiss the "creation myth" of the Bible and yet many have turned to prayer in their hour of need. I don't believe in a 'big old man' with a 'big beard' or some Father Christmassy type figure sitting on a cloud surrounded by angels playing harps. I do believe that scientists could be close to understanding something of how God created our universe. I also believe they don't understand enough about it to go messing about with it.

I personally lean more towards the multiverse theory than the string theory - but I do remember that they are exactly that "theories" and both could turn out to be totally wrong.

Re: The World Will Not End Tomorrow

To be honest I'm not a religious type but the scientist view of the "big bang" theory along with umpteen coincidences that we are told led to the creation of life on this planet, a theory that is banded around as almost fact.. is even more ridiculas than the theory of a someone/thing creating life.

Supposedly the chaps at CERN are attempting to replicate the “Big Bang” in miniature but how will they know if they have been successful . Nobody was there when it actually happened

At best they can only make assumptions.

What a complete waste of money!! Are there not more important things that this money could have been spent on? I can think of quite a few more worthwhile causes.

agree this ones more stupid cos its cost umpteen billions to justify the existence of a bunch of ego-tistical nutters keeping there well paid jobs.
