I'm disappointed in the register - Do people really believe such sensationalist articles. A transformer cut out for a few hours - We have about 20 such incidents a year (i.e. power cuts) thats why there's diesel backup...

You should care about what CERN (and other high energy physics places) is doing btw. I'm personally convinced that understanding the building blocks of matter will eventually lead to more discoveries in medicine as well as the possibility of safe nuclear power at last (cold fusion etc). Next time time you hear of a person going in for cancer treatment remember that the technology was probably derived from high energy physics... And as you're reading this text, also remember that the world wide web was invented here at CERN too.

I agree with what you say. And have been fascinated by the subject, as a layman schooled in the humanities, ever since I picked up a copy of Asimov's "Inside the Atom" (1956), which I quickly followed up with "Atom: Journey Across the Subatomic Cosmos" (1991) .... Elementary stuff, I know, but fun. And, I still think it's ok to have a laugh at "end of the world" predictions.
