They were probably Persian (Iranian) Magi ...Zorastrians from Yazd.
Arabia is South of Palestine , to the West of Bethlehem are the illegally occupied lands then the Mediterrean sea

So it should have been wise men from the south? Or from the south west?
But if they did come from the East, maybe they were really Chinese! Well, the Bible doesn't actually tell us does it?

would HAVE been
Load of old rubbish. They would all have had PMT, kicked and gouged each others eyes out and WW1 would have started 2000 years earlier.

Re: There came wise men from the east........
Three Kings must be Chinese
We three kings of ORIENT are
Bearing gifts we traverse so far
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star
Isn't it the shepherds that wear the tea towels and arabic type dresses?

Ah but that's a carol Gayle. The Bible doesn't even say they were kings. It says they were wise men. The idea that they were kings comes from non-Biblical tradition as does the idea that there were three. The Bible doesn't mention a number but it does mention 3 gifts and the assumption has been made of three men bringing one gift each.
Yes the shepherds wear the 'tea towels'. The magi are more like Aladdin, after all they were pre-Islam Arabs (or Chinese)
