They start young
This afternoon we were driving down the road minding our own business on the way back from the allotment when a toddler, barely able to walk, wobbled out from a garden in order to throw something into the road at our car!
A vandal in training? a chaveling?
Haven't a clue what was thrown or why but it didn't hit us as the child was far too small to have enough "oomph" to propel the missile far enough.

Re: They start young
just wait until hes old enough to see over the steering wheel of a car he will be doing a lot worse
kids in my area used to stand on the gararges roofs and throw rocks at passing cars
only the new shiny ones though and by the time the car stopped the kids had scarpered the back way
if caught the parents wouldnt care less and in my opinion the parents should be made to pay and if not they shoukd go to jail
maybe if parents had somthing to loose they might just bring their kids up right

Re: They start young
You should have asked me Willow, It was the top of a tin can which he/she? expertly flicked but the aim was off and it sailed harmlessly behind us (just)
Probably a remnant of what SHOULD have been collected for recycling! but thats another thread.

Re: They start young
This happened to me in Blackpool last year, the lad was about 12 or 13? He raised his arm in a throwing gesture in my direction of travel. I heard the impact of a shard of red brick bounce off the boot lid and across the rear window screen. Because I had seen him raise his arm I was already looking in my rear view and was aware that their was no traffic behind me. I hit brakes with an intentional degree of violence and slammed the car in to reverse cutting off his intended escape route. The little bastard went very white and I’m sure he started crying, he shot off down a side street which I followed him down at a safe speed, I parked up half way down the street and followed him on foot until he lost me in some other poor person’s garden. I knew I wouldn’t catch him, and if I did I knew I couldn’t hit the little ****. My intention was to show him that he was vulnerable and could be challenged. I think he got the message.

Re: They start young
The problem is that you're not allowed to protect your property - if you had hit him you'd have had the law on your back.
Years ago if you did that and the kid went crying to his parents, they'd probably have delivered the same treatment!
How times change, and not always for the better

Re: They start young
If you did catch them, they would probably claim it was "Performance Art" and that they were working towards a grant from the Arts Council. The ideal answer to that one is to land one on them, and tell them that too is "Performance Art".

Re: They start young
I feel sorry for these children, they dont stand a chance when their only role models dont teach them the difference between wrong and right. My concern is that this toddler is left unattended could've easily walked into the road and been hit by a car.

Re: They start young
A few years ago i was driving to work.....I had just gone through the traffic lights at Intack and was going up Shadsworth Rd.......a young boy who could not have been much more that 6 yrs old walked straight out in front of my car........I pulled to the side of the road and told him that he could get knocked down like that......it was obvious that he had done it just to test me......he said 'if you effing knocked me down I would get my mum to sue you'
I wanted to slap him...... but just got back in my car and drove to work. But if I had not been going slowly I could have killed that child. It certainly scared me.

Re: They start young
Some years ago my eldest daughter saw 2 little boys aged about 6, from a nearby estate, throwing bottles into the road near her house and smashing them. She went out and gave them a good telling off and sent them home. Ten minutes later the mother of one of them knocked on her door and, when she answered, poured out a stream of obscenities at her for having shouted at her child. When my daughter told the woman what the kids had been doing she shouted that it was none of my daughter's effing business and she'd effing knock her effing teeth down her effing throat if she ever effing shouted at him again. What's the betting those kids, who will now be about 18, are now fully fledged vandals/criminals?
So I'm an old reactionary but I am nostalgic for the days when, if a teacher, policeman or neighbour gave a badly behaved kid a "thick ear", the kid didn't dare tell Dad because he'd get another one. Brutal? Hmmm. Hard? Possibly. Most of us, however, grew up to be decent citizens. God help the next generation.

I'm with you West Ender........I got up to mischief.......and took my hidings when I got found out. I don't think my parents practised child abuse......they just wanted to instill in me a sense of responsibility for my actions.
