From the reading the paper it sound like the girl was overtaking her parents when she was hit. If that is true she would have been head on with the oncomming Range Rover.

Re: This is why we have traffic laws

i think all the adults concerned were in the wrong... the driver shouldnt have been drinking and the children shouldnt have been on the road...

I imagine that the parents would only be given a suspended sentence anyway, but the driver of the car still should be punished for her drink driving, which is no less of a crime, but the manslaughter should probably get a similar suspended sentence rather than a conviction, after all, how could she be expected, under the influence of alcohol or not, to know a 7yr old was going to be on the road on a quad bike! It was just as likely to lead to an accident regardless of her state.
i was meaning motorised vehicles, should have put it,could never expect you to grasp that regardless of what you imagine the parents should get, they should be prosecuted, along with the driver.

Re: This is why we have traffic laws

There is far too much of this about in different guises, as Blazey says, children are allowed on the road on a bicycle, I have a 7 year old and would not allow him anywhere near the road on a bike, let alone follow me in the car on a quad, quads are powerful and I doubt many 7 year (or even 10 year) olds could handle one, I see quite a few kids on motorized machines, improperly attired, kids in cars without seat belts or child seats, kids left wandering down the street behind the parents on main roads, etc etc, and in my opinion, that is neglect and should be punishable by prosecution. Killing a person whilst driving drunk, should carry a mandatory life sentence. Yes, I am old school, and would willingly allow flogging and hanging, the law is way too soft.

I am stuck in the middle in regards to flogging and hanging.... i think the law is pretty crappy and they get things wrong too often but if it was with out a doubt that the person had done the crime, murder for example then i would agree......erm, that make sense?

It makes perfect sense, with dna profiles, the old excuse that the wrong people get hanged is out the window for me, nice to see one of the 'youngsters' even half agreeing with this, makes a nice change.

Re: This is why we have traffic laws

Check this link. The other driver was tested for drink driving but the test was NEGATIVE and she was released. She was not a hit and run driver either. She did stop but the father told her to go home as the girl wasn't badly hurt, so she left. The father then TOOK THE CHILD HOME and didn't even take her to hospital until she took a turn for the worse! How many parents would do that? If your child had an accident wouldn't you immediately want to have them checked over?

Father was probably selfishly concerned that he would have to explain HOW the injuries occured.

One who was trying to cover up allowing his kids to ride quad bikes on the road in the dark while following them home

Re: This is why we have traffic laws

Re: This is why we have traffic laws

Sod protecting the parents. They didnt protect their little girl by allowing her to go out on the roads on this quad. They were certainly selfish enough to just think about themselves too instead of getting medical attention and making sure the girl had no injuries, however minor they might have seemed at the time.

Re: This is why we have traffic laws

According to the paper this morning it is highly likely that he will be prosecuted.

As for breathalising the other driver - isn't that normal procedure in cases of a fatal accident? Good job she didn't pour herself a stiff drink when she got home to calm down after the shock.
