It will probably mean that as well as 12 year olds outside off-licenses asking you to get their favourite cider we will have 16/17 year olds that yesterday could legally buy tobacco saying, "ere mate go in an' ger us twenty fags will yer I'm gaggin", and lets face it THEY are a lot bigger than 12 year olds and might be harder to say no to!

Re: tobacco sales
Do shops always check ID, I dont think so because the young teenagers manage to get fags even though they aren't 16, dont think this will make any difference.

Re: tobacco sales
I don't think there has ever been a legal age where you couldn't smoke, merely an age at which you could buy them.
Of course we can rely on all shopkeepers to stick to the law anyway regardless of how old they look....... NOT

Re: tobacco sales
Another waste of money, why don't they make some sensible changes to the law? Non of us are against the principle but I think we all know it won't make a jot of difference.

Re: tobacco sales
Dosnt matter what they say or do the government is not going to push to hard because of the cash it makes from tobacco. Ok they make the purchase illegal to under 18's but not illegal to smpke as they are the next generation of coffer fillers so they dont want to discourage them to much. its all smoke n lights same as with booze.

Then their parents can buy them a pack. With a small commission on top of course.

Its called showing the public that the government is doing something about teenage smoking even if it is a crackpot idea. Nice word that Tealeaf.
More importantly it is establishing a precedent for when the government decides that it will be 21 and over to buy booze and drink in licensed premises. Or it might be 21 to be able to drive. Or a cut off at the other end of the age range – say 70.
