Todays Youth - Easily Offended ?

The Pogues record Fairytale Of New York has been censored on Radio 1. Apparently the word faggot is deemed to cause offence.

The censorship has not been applied to Radio 2.

Given that Radio 1 is generally aimed at a the teenage/college/uni market does this mean that todays youth are easily offended or is it because they pick up on anything not politically correct to create a storm ?

Re: Todays Youth - Easily Offended ?

They have dubbed that on music tv too, tho when released as xmas no 2 in 1987 it was quite fine to play in its entirety & thought nothing of it when nearly 12 back then

Must be a lot more 'young' cheap lousey faggots available now that get very upset

Re: Todays Youth - Easily Offended ?

it doesn't bother me in the slightest! in my opinion its a song and people should just get over it! its not like its directly aimed at anyone in specific. Its a word for crying out loud! it does my head in! (by the way i'm only 20)

Re: Todays Youth - Easily Offended ?

Can think of a worse lyrically rude song, that the bbc did try to ban unsuccessfully 'relax' by frankie goes to hollywood The hardest one to play was Eamon's F.... it i dont want u back with 33 expletives & the rebuck song FURB by frankie is 22 expletives tho super furry animals song had record 49 swearies those are the record holders for the top 40.

Tho i think the music youth listen to especially rap/r&b have much worser & nasty lyrics than faggots !!

Re: Todays Youth - Easily Offended ?

Lyrics for song & yes kathleen there is a worser word lol

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one
Came in AT eighteen to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So Happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got cars big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old
When you first took my hand
On a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging,
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day

You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God it's our last

The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you

The boys of the NYPD choir
Still singing "Galway Bay"
And the bells are ringing out
For Christmas Day

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Radio 1 censors Pogues' Fairytale

They are running a poll on the bbc website - 6365 people have voted 95% say it shouldnt have been edited.

I dont understand why theyve done it. Didnt bother them before so why now?

Because there is some pompous git sat in an office at BBC towers who thinks he/she doesn't like the word and wants to make us think they are doing something useful with the rip off they call a licence.
