There is nothing quite as insincere as a New York shop assistant asking you to "have a nice day".

The way the majority think they own the world yet as mani says, they know very little of what is outside their own borders

The bastardisation of the one true language (You speak ENGLISH yet you feel you have to change the spelling of perfectly good words and whatever happened in the deep south????)

How and why so many people can vote such that a complete imbecile is in charge of the country, come on, are you all blind??

I'm sorry LYY, I have this weird inbuilt dislike of America, I'm sure its not absolutely every American but up to now all those I have met have been ignorant, arrogant and so 'false' (PS, I have met quite a few in many locations around the world, ask me about bateaux mouche some day)

Just trying to remember if you were at the July meet at the Shoulder of Mutton, the same one Billcat came to?

He'll be over for the Christmas meet, and I'm sure he'd like to discuss your point with you.

I don't think we can critize the Yanks too much about the English language. The simple truth is that English spelling and even the alphabet itself was not standardised in the UK until the late 18th and early 19th centuries; witness the small s in texts, which resembles an f. The Americans simply broke away in 1776 and continued to use the language as they had done; it was we who changed.

An example are the words 'Scots' and 'Scotch'; the latter, in British english, applies to those people from the skirt wearing nation to the north; the latter is the drink produced there. Language purists from both sides of the border get most upset when the adjective is wrongly applied. Yet Johnson, Boswell and Pepys wrote of the Scotch people; the Americans still do. We don't.

Hey entwisi, I certainly understand your feelings . I guess every country has that 10 - 20% of the population that give them a bad reputation. Trust me I've met, and probably been, many of the above.

Heck, I hate to think Accywebbers would think of me as the normal American, I really don't think there is one. (Although I may be the nicest one hahahahaha ) I find the more different people I meet from different cultures/countries the more I can understand and accept the good and the bad character traits.

By the same token, would if I chose the "average" Brit. by using Accywebbers? Care to pick which one of my new found family is the most normal one? Actually, that may be a bit of fun eh?

It is not a skirt any more than a smoking jacket is a raincoat.

There are so many other languages that have contributed to our language that its got more variety than Heinz ever had or will have. Everything pinches bits to suit and makes others up and in the end a lot end up in the dictionary. Mind you as for the American language I still cant get my napper around "do the math" it just does not sound right.

Who loves ya baby, accyweb would be a very boring place to be if 'we' all agreed with each other, your views although sometimes a little 'obscure' in my opinion, are a welcome diversion from the mundane chat that exists on the forum after midnight. Regards Ian.

Why my fellow Americans would choose to vore for G.W. Bush is a mystery to many of us over here as well. Please do not forget that there are huge numbers of Americans who did not vote for him - in fact, in 2000, there were more who voted for Mr. Gore!

Perhaps even more of a mystery is how Yale, which ususally produces some very bright grads, managed to give W a degree.

Only if entwisi wishes to discuss the point. Funny, thought I was in agreement with entwisi on any number of points. Not this time, apparently. Oh, well, can't please everyone!

As you well know, we have a little something called the electoral college. There have been 4 presidents who were elected without a plurality of popular votes, (including John Quincy Adams and Geoge W. Bush). Eleven have been elected without a majority of popular votes - including Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, (twice), Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton, (twice). So what's your point?

President Bush earned a BA degree from Yale in 1968 and an MBA from Harvard in 1975, (the only U.S. president to have one of those, by the way). Neither institution is known for giving out degrees as if they were candy.

1......So what's your beef? Blue Sirlion with pepper sauce.

2......Yes, we still have them. We have plenty in the public sector claiming to be tradesmen.

3.....As opposed to too small? Depends on what is being sized
