Re: Towneley Hall
Actually I haven't lived in Burnley since I was 9 so I wouldn't have got in for free, even though I am from Burnley I lived in Pendle.

Re: Towneley Hall
My son went on Tuesday last week .he gave our old post code but told them in no uncertain terms what he thought about it,,, also he says half the stuff has gone ,
It seems that the hall was left by the Townleys to the people of Burnley to enjoy free of charge and the powers that be cant get out of that clause... So they are exploting visitors from out of town....Well it serves them right if it all back fires on them.....

Re: Towneley Hall
I believe in Blackburn there is a Beez card which is only available to residents but gives you discount on various activities.
Any resident of Blackpool can get a discount on admittance to The Grand Theater and Sandcastle.
They are not free admissions but they are benefits available to residents only.

The hall was bought by Burnley council in 1901.

Re: Towneley Hall
Apparently they bought it because the Towneley's failed to breed and the fringes of the family didn't want to keep it on.
Wasn't there a thing a couple of years ago where the government subsidised all musuems etc so they could be free admittance, and then they have since stopped the subsidy. I only vagueley recall it but I'm sure somebody with a better memory will tell us the full story.

Even so there has to be a way to be fair to all. I could understand if it was to maintain exhibits but if they have gone do they have an excuse?

Re: Towneley Hall
Seems quite common to give residents a break. In Ontario residents pay next to nothing for fishing licences, but people from out of the Province pay quite a bit ... and from outside of Canada, they pay an arm and a leg. Same for hunting licences ... except for skunk, but you have to wrestle them into submission. I can vaguely remember Townley Hall, and $8 does seem a lot to pay. But I suppose there has to be some compensation for living in Burnley.
