Toxic Spinach

Some news from Australia, for anyone who is interested. Remember Popeye and his diet of spinach to give him good health and make him strong - well you can forget that at the present time over here.. Supermarkets in Australia are hurriedly removing toxic baby spinach from their shelves. Yes, some spinach is so toxic it is making people very ill, suffering from rapid heartbeats, fever, blurred vision, hallucinations, and so on. As well as spinach some salad mix has also been recalled. We just assume the food we buy is ok to eat but that’s not always the case. Apparently the most feasible explanation for this toxicity is that the produce has been contaminated by a weed…..I bet that wouldn’t happen on our friend’s allotment.

Dorothy, there is no chance that this will get me….I avoid spinach…I do not like it….even when it is sneakily added to salad leaves.
I dislike red chard too.
And as for Popeye eating it…..well who wants arms like fat hams….not me.

Re: Toxic Spinach

Hi there taddy and dottyi34,
Just been talking to my daughter in Australia, it would seem that "only" 1 supermarket has been affected by this toxic spinach. IGA is the supermarket chain involved, so don't get worried taddy, keep on growing your spinach in your garden, that is if you do grow it.
Cheers

Thanks for that pal but I don't even try to grow spinach, I have enough to do with growing potatoes, Onions, Sprouts, Strawberries, Rhubarb, Tomatoes, green and runner beans, Oh, I am getting tired even thinking about next year, time for a pint or two of Hobgoblin.
