Re: traditions and habits
When we were little we always locked the door on new years eve,,because of the mummers,
Now before you think i am cracking up ,they were mostly young lads with their faces blackened and dressed in womens clothes who just walked into your house with a dustpan and brush ,and they proceded to sweep your hearth etc for money,,they never spoke but they just went mummmmmmm, they scared the hell out of us kids

Re: traditions and habits
Christmas tradition when i was a kid was fly down the stairs as soon as you woke up and rip open the pressies that santa had left under the tree, then a phone call from ireland on christmas morning from my cousin, play with the games i'd got from santa, then go and get dressed before my sisters and brother arrived, watch the queen (mum always made us watch the queen at 3pm), then fight over where everyone was sitting the only ones who knew where they were sitting was mum & dad everyone else had to fight over sitting on a stool (reaching the table no problem) or sitting on the settee and even then there was arguments on that who was sitting in the middle cos the table leg was in the middle. Then after eating and washing up getting the cards out and playing cards all night until mum had lost all her money and trying to get my brother in laws tin off him!!!

Re: traditions and habits
When I was little every time I went the loo I looked behond teh curtain. I'd stopped up late one night and watched a starsky and hutch program where this woman was attacked by a bloke who came from behind the batchroom curtain. It was a totally conditioned response rather than a habit as such. I guess its just like my habit of typing 'the' teh.

Re: traditions and habits
Oooh I'm glad I'm not the only one frightened of Mummers. I used to be petrified of anyone with blacked up faces, even our coal man! People with natural dark skin didn't scare me but people with painted faces and strange scary eyes that didn't match the face used to frighten the life out of me.

Re: traditions and habits
Me and Jack go for a meal with his nan,his dad and a friend of ours called Jennifer at Blackburn Cathedral sometime during xmas.
Christmas eve everyone in the house has take away of their choice for tea-even if everyone wants different eg chinese, maccy d's etc.
We leave a mince pie and sherry out for Santa on xmas eve,
and the biggest tradition that will always last.....christmas centres around Jack!....attention,presents,food...everything...
its all about Jack

Re: traditions and habits
Has anybody actually mentioned leaving the carrot/apple for the reindeer, the milk or alcohol and a mince pie for santa? I like doing that, I also write a little letter from santa in the morning for my brother and sister too.
