Rescuers have found a man alive under the rubble days after a giant earthquake rocked Indonesia.

The search party discovered the man as they reached thousands of homeless and hungry victims on remote islands of the country's Sumatra region.

The teams scrambled to free the man from under a partially destroyed three-storey house on Nias Island after hearing his cries for help.

A rescuer said: "The man was saying 'Help, help, give me water'."

Rescue teams had called off their search in Nias but the man's family had persisted and employed labourers to dig through his house.

After a seven-hour operation Hendra Ho Keng, 42, was stretchered off for treatment as his family wept for joy.

Rescuer Omar Flores said: "It's a miracle, it's a miracle. I can't believe what is happening in my heart and mind right now."

The survivor's brother Kok Ciong said: "We had given up hope. Look, we had even provided coffins."

The man had been buried with his wife and children, who are presumed dead.

Thousands of people have been made homeless and hundreds killed by the 8.7 magnitude earthquake which struck on Monday.

The quake devastated the islands of Nias, Banyak and Simeulue, which were already recovering from the Boxing Day tsunami disaster.

If Toba blows it won't just affect the people of that region, it will have a devastating effect on the whole world.

And to think we were speculating about Yellowstone not long ago. It's a very fragile world when you think about it.

Where are the sandwich-board men at a time like this?

It just gets worse,the human being doesn't deserve this type of destruction.
We have enough destruction with wars and fighting without the forces of nature trying to kill us as well.

You obviously have a fine palate, Jason. This is what happens when you depart the grim metropolis of Padiham for the exotic delights of Colne.
As for not caring about the earth, I'm afraid it is not within my powers, nor within yours, I think, to foresee and then prevent natural disasters such the the Asian Tsunami. Should it otherwise be the case, then I am quite sure this would provide the basis for an excellent thread.

By the way, how would you classify the AIDS epidemic? Man-made or Act of God?

I didn't say i could prevent things,i just hoped we could do something more to preserve the earth a little bit longer for our childrens and grandchildrens sakes.
Do you recycle?.........that is making a start.
I am sure we can all do our little bit,i know we cant stop earthquakes and volcanoes erupting,but if we can get better provisions in place then maybe we are doing our bit.
This is my opinion and i'm entitled to it.
AIDS EPIDEMIC..............Brand new thread idea i think,i'm not going off topic.

According to Dr Who last Saturday the Earth is safe for ages yet. We'll all have colonised other planets and inter married with aliens before the final destruction of the planet.

On a more serious note I would have looked at it the other way round - that we've got enough on our plate with natural disasters without all the stupid wars and famines caused by selfish human beings.
