Re: TV License - where do you buy yours

Not sure if the newsagents on Broadway is a pay point (unless it is the one on the corner just opened) B.P garage near the roundabout is def. a pay point cause I got a tv license there last year, but much easier to do it online.

Mick, I do hope your joking and just put the wrong smiley?????

Its what you need if you have any equipment that is capable of receiving a broadcast signal, TV, video, TV card in PC etc. Irrespective of how you get that signal (Freeview, sky, cable etc)

Physically yes.

Legally no.

They have detector vans and bossy little men who knock on your door and tell you they know you have no TV license and you get a nasty fine.

They also assume that every house in the land has a TV so the 'detector van' which claims to be able to track down TVs which are on is a load of pigs trotters.

When Busman lived in Primrose Street before we were married he was always getting demands for payment for a TV licence and he would tell them repeatedly that he did not have a TV. They threatened to take him to court and everything to which he would reply "OK go on then." because he did not have a TV. He used to come here to watch TV. It just seemed impossible to the licence people that there should be anybody who doesn't have a TV.

I have friends who have never had a TV in their lives. I think they finally managed to convince the authorities that they don't have one.

The licence fee goes to the BBC.

My view of this is that if you could block your TV from receiving BBC programs you should be able to have a TV without a licence. You can have one if you can prove it will only show videos. We used to have one under those terms at work.

There used to be a cheaper licence just for black and white TV and an even cheaper one if you only had a radio. Yes the radio needs one too because that's got BBC on it.

The mad thing is that you guys abroad can get BBC programs without a licence!

Can you explain this please? I know you have to pay extra when you first sign up to DD in order to get you in credit, but I wasn't aware that it actually cost more.

Re: TV License - where do you buy yours

You pay for your licence in instalments of around £33 per month every three months. Because the majority of your licence is paid for on a pay-as-you-go basis, quarterly payments also incur a small premium of £1.25 per quarter, which is included in your payment.

Re: TV License - where do you buy yours

if we pay for sky etc then why should we pay for a licence?
i mean bbc dont exactly have good programmes do they, its a rip off but if you are blind, The blind concession gives you 50% off the cost of your TV Licence. So a colour licence will cost £67.75 and a black and white licence will cost £22.75.....WOW!!

Why would anyone who's blind want to buy a colour licence ?

because you can be registered blind but still have some sight.

IIRC if you have 75% vision or less you can register as blind.

Mick, Its not about what you watch, just owning the equipment that is capable of showing BBC means you need one. As Willow says, if you remove teh tuner from a TV such that it can only be used with say a games console over scart then you don't need a license

In which case you would be partially sighted, not blind.

Re: TV License - where do you buy yours

You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV.

If you use a set-top box with a hi-fi system or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.
