I also pay my licence monthly at about £11.50-ish a month, but the initial payment may have been less (about £9 something I think). It says my licence is £135-50, so I don't think I'm paying any more for DD. Perhaps it's if you pay quarterly?

I think it's good value when you consider the stuff you get on the BBC. BBC4 has a quality stuff on there, as do BBC2 and occasionally BBC1. I'd hate to see all TV stations go commercial, it'd be a nightmare. Just look how bad Sky is for adverts!

ITV is just a joke! I haven't watched anything on ITV (except the football, which is done very badly) in over 2 years. C4 used to be good, but it's gone downhill very fast.

What gets me about the licence though is that you can only get BBC3 & 4 if you have Sky or cable or if you pay extra for one of those digi boxes. But you would still have to pay the same licence fee if you didn't have one of those extras.

I think the BBC should run adverts like every other station. There is no way that you can convince me that they are simply a public service any more. They wouldn't go bust as they make money from overseas sales, merchandising and even selling programmes to channels like Living, etc.

Bring on adverts and scrap the licence is my opinion.

From 2009 you won't get any stations in the Granada area without a digital receiver. Let's face it, cost isn't an issue anymore, as you can get a digi-box for about £20 nowadays. OK, so people can't get the extra channels without a STB, but you're going to have to get one sometime.

The thing is, commercial stations just wouldn't produce the kind of programmes the BBC do now. If they saw a profit in it, they'd be making them now too. Just recently I've really enjoyed watching 'How We Built Britain', 'The History of Rock' and 'Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain'. Top quality programmes the likes of which no commercial station is producing.
The basic package on Sky is £15 per month and it is total rubbish. The BBC is just over £11 per month and the BBC are producing its own programmes! How can that not be VFM?

Did anyone have the unfortunate experiance to switch on to the BBC over the weekend? All four channels were at some point broadcasting from this so-called "Glastonbury Festival". This was in fact, no more than an excuse for tens of thousands of dole scrounging drug addicts to cavort around some muddy field in the south-west while listening to something supposedly called music. The BBC, meanwhile, handed over millions of pounds of public money in order to televise this event. Well, none of it was my money. As a law-abiding citizen I have no intention of paying for this nonsense. The sooner they abolish the license the better; in the interim, take my recomendation and don't pay it - you know you'll feel better.

It is not possible to get Freeview at my house(Wallbanks and others have spent days trying to get a signal at neighbours of mine), we are in such a bad location. There is no cable option so we are stuck with Sky. If you don't want a subscription package its ~£100 which is not that cheap when you add on £130 for a license

Freesat is a one off payment of £150. No subscription fees.

I buy my license from a local shop now but before then it was always the Post Office, right back to the days when we had to have a license to listen to the radio.

Not quite right entwisi. You need a TV license if you have equipment that is capable of receiving TV broadcasts from anywhere or by any means.

It is the government that issues the TV license and part of the proceeds go to fund the BBC. Although it is the BBC that is charged with collecting the license fees and keeping track of those without one.

If the BBC didn’t exist or the government stopped funding the BBC and it had to survive as the commercial channels do by showing adverts, we would still have to buy a TV license. So those people agitating for no TV license have no chance of success.

Finally to those people complaining about the TV license fee, be careful what you wish for.

When you first sign up for a direct debit it costs £25 something for 6 months that means you are paid up for that year. Then it goes down to £11.50 something like that so then you are 6 months in credit.
