Re: TV License - where do you buy yours
Well i've found all the paypoints close to my mums thanks to the link from KSH, so I'll give her the choice of paying it herself at one of them or paying it over the phone for her. Thanks everyone.

Re: TV License - where do you buy yours
thats more likely because he is broadcasting his radio in a public place which you do need a licence for, hence us not being allowed to play our radio in the office anymore as it is being broadcast to more than a few people. But you definately don't need a licence for a radio at home

Re: TV License - where do you buy yours
No, I was meaning when he lived down Primrose Street before we were married. He doesn't have a radio on his coach.
They were pestering him for not having a TV licence and they asked if he had a radio.
I can only remember the days when it said that your radio was covered by your TV licence. I've never not had a TV licence since then so didn't know you no longer need one if you only have a radio.

Re: TV License - where do you buy yours
Heehee, I'm only 36 years behind the times! Radio licences were phased out in 1971!!! I suppose they can't imagine anyone having a radio and not a TV nowadays.
I've been having a google and found this little gem. I seem to remember that if you had a tranny in your caravan you were covered as long as there was no-one else back home listening to the wireless there. IN which case you needed two licences.

Same here in Aus Brian... we have several free tv channels that we just plug into, and we only pay if we want satelite or cable... no tv licenses required here.

Re: TV License - where do you buy yours
It’s almost the same for TV’s.
If you have a portable TV outside the home it is covered by the home license providing that it is not mains powered.
However you can have a mains powered TV outside the home (like in a caravan) and you don’t need a license for it PROVIDING that no one at home is watching the home TV. Don’t ask me how they police that.
You can have a TV in every room in your house with just the one TV license UNLESS a room is rented out to a paying lodger. He would then require his own license. I’m not quite sure how that applies to a son or daughter with a job and paying board though. I think they would be exempt.
Did you know that if you are watching an unlicensed TV in someone else’s home not only can they be fined but you can be fined also even if your own home is licensed?
Did you also know that when you buy a new TV from a bona fide retailer, the retailer is obliged to notify the appropriate authority of the address where the TV is to be installed? For instance, if you buy a TV from Comet they will ask you for your name and address under the guise of registering your TV for the manufacturer’s guarantee. I’m not sure what happens if you take the set with you and refuse to give your name and address.
However on balance I think that the TV license is very good value as the bulk of the money goes to fund the BBC and the BBC does a lot with the money. Radio stations by the dozen and many TV channels free to view.
In days of old with ‘cable’ radio from Uni-Relay and similar businesses you still had to have a “Wireless License”.

Re: TV License - where do you buy yours
I'd happily pay double the licence fee, so that Jonathon Ross, and Graham Norton, could double their current respective fees of 15 and 18 million pounds...he lied.

Re: TV License - where do you buy yours
Ok, let's clear a few things up here.......
If you pay for your lic on dd, you only pay more if you pay quarterly. This is classed as a 'pay as you go' scheme. 4 pymts over the year, each pymt giving you 3 months worth of tv, each pymt currently is just over £35, with a £1.25 admin fee built in. If you pay on a dd, either annually, or monthly, you just pay the lic fee, nothing extra. Annually is a 1 off pymt, done with, that's it, untill the following year. Monthly you end up in advance with your pymts. If you set it up roughly in the 1st 3 weeks of a month, your 1st 5 pymts work out at just over £27, then as the 6th mnth onwards pymts drop to just over £11 a mnth, this is when you start to pay towards the following years lic, so you actually end up 6 mnths in advance with your pymts. If setup within the last week of mnth, you would then have 4 pymts of just under £34, then from the 5th pymt onwards, would drop to just over £11. This is because you always have to be given 14 days notice before the 1st pymt taken, & pymts tend to fall the 1st working day of a mnth, so if its setup towards the end of the mnth the pymt can't be taken the start of the following mnth as not enough notice is given, so pymts bunch up. Obviously at any stage, if you are no longer requiring the lic, then any refund due to you would be sent back to you. Exactly the same if you pay annually or quarterly. Refunds are only issued in unused quarters, & refunds are not issued on expired lic.
If you pay by pay point, unless you do a 1 off pymt - either cash or debit card, you DO pay more. If you are on a card scheme (MCP or CEE) you actually pay around £70 more for your lic fee. You pay for the 'priviledge' of being able to spread your pymts further. Pay Point is a completely seperate company to TV Licensing.
Blind licenses - to qualify for a 50% reduction, you need to be registered either blind, or severely sight impaired. You would need to provide a copy of either a blind cetificate, or a letter signed by the opthomologist, before this would be issued. The licence needs to be in the name of the blind person.
2nd homes - If the 2nd home is a permant structure then it requires a 2nd lic. If you have a caravan on a site, your home lic would cover it, as long as there would be no simultaneous use. You would need to inform TVL of this & they can send you a declaration letter which needs to be signed & sent back.
At home 1 lic covers all of you & as many tv's as you like, providing you all live under the roof as a family unit. If there are seperate tennacy agreements, then seperate licenses would be required.
A lic always belongs to an individual, NOT to the property, & is only ever in 1 persons name. If that named person moves from the address, then they can either transfer that lic to a new address, or choose to cancel the lic. Anybody still remaining at the address that had previously been covered by the lic, would no longer be so, & would need to get a lic in their own name.
Hope this clears a few things up for people.

No, I didn't know that. Crikey! Does that mean I should ask people to produce their TV licence if the TV is on when I call at their house?

I didn't know that either. Suppose somebody is actually buying the TV as a gift for someone else though? They ask for the name and address of the purchaser. They don't ask you if the TV is going to be for that address do they?
We have a TV licence because we have a TV but recently someone gave us a smaller set (which my daughter uses) now supposing we hadn't had a TV and therefore hadn't had a licence - should the person who gave us that one have reported the fact to some authority, like when you sell your car?
Life is a lot more complicated than I ever imagined, and I find it confusing enough as it is.

Only if the detector van happens to be near.

Isn’t it usual when buying something as a gift for someone and it requires to be registered for a guarantee you give the name of the recipient. I do. Not that I buy many gifts these days.

Only when Big Brother has finally arrived. Any year now!
In trying to cover all the angels the Licensing Authority have got themselves (and us) into a morass of legislation.
