Glad to see we are back to normal,just been talking to a bloke from Australia that is back- packing his way through Europe God Strooth I thought, Makes a change.Hold on to your goolagongs mate.Especially if Lynx is about.

And yes I was in a watering Hole having just left an important meeting at the research center.We need all the help we can get!!!

I'm not convinced that the closure of pubs is down to the smoking ban... I have never once heard anyone say they won't go to the pub because they can't smoke.. or anywhere else .. you can't smoke on any form of transport, football games,concerts,or in a doctors waiting room... non of these have closed down because of non smoking.

But you can smoke at home with cheap cans of beer which gives you an alternative to the pub & the weather,the others have no real alternative which would cause them to shut.

if the smoking ban was irrelivent why is it pubs with good smoking facilities do better than those without ?

I think the smoking ban affected many pubs. Other pubs, food pubs particularly have seen an upswing. People want more than alcohol when visiting a pub.

It's a shame. Supermarket beer has had a bigger impact on pubs IMO.

Tax laws need modernising to protect pubs and curb binge drinking.

not irrelevant just not the entire reason why pubs are screwed. Prices are way too high and the cost of living is screwed and low wages = drinking at home rather than at a pub. Big chain pubs and those that drop their pints to minimal price seem to be the ones that do better...then again those pubs are serving fosters cheap which is a dog****y beer

The closure rate is now running at 300 a month for pubs and restaurants.

I dont feel the Smoking Ban on its own has done the greatest damage, its just the latest in a long line of negative influences on the Pub trade. The monopoly of the Breweries/Pub Companies and their restraint of trade and high rents are certainly also a major factor. As too is the more relaxed licensing laws. You now have a situation where a lot of pubs dont get as many young people in as they used to because they prefer to frequent the town centre type establishments which open later in the evening, till early morning. Quite often these places only open towards weekends, and not during the day either.

Because younger drinkers are using these places rather than the more traditional pubs, not only are you decreasing the footfall across the pubs, you also see a less diverse cross section of the community drinking together. This in tern brings other problems such as anti-social behaviour through youngsters drinking amongst their own age group, rather than be "chaperoned" so to speak, by older...hopefully wiser...adults, and encouraged to drink more sensibly and be more respectful!

The Price of Alcohol is obviously a major issue too! I can honestly say ive never known such a huge discrepancy in the price of drink in Pubs as compared to Supermarkets!! But is it the Pubs that are to expensive or are the Supermarkets selling far to cheap?? Obviously we all want to pay as little as we can for a given product, but i would be interested to see how the price of Alcohol in Pubs today, compares to the price it was in Pubs say 25 years ago, and see how the figures compare expressed as a percentage of the average working wage! I would guess the prices would not show up to be so much more expensive now, which would then mean that the Supermarkets are causing a great problem for Pubs by holding prices down too low!!

I know i think long and hard before i go out of an evening now, and only really go out to a Pub or Club if theres live entertainment on. Otherwise may as well stay in, as sit in an empty pub/club.

In 1970 - £20 would buy you 200 pints.

Today on the minimum wage of £217-70 for a 37 1/2 hr week you would be lucky to get 100.

The results of a Scottish survey published last year shows that around 41% of alcohol is now purchased outside of Pubs...i'd have thought it even higher to be honest. It also shows some Supermarket Beer as being sold for the equivalent of 28p per pint!! This is something that pubs just can never compete with!

We can all make alcoholic drinks in fact to make a (still) was one of my first science projects.The problem is to get a balance between social drinking that is controlled where people can enjoy themselves or forcing people to make their own.

Said it before, I regularly frequent 2 very successful pubs, The Black Horse and The Peel Park, they are always busy and are clean, well run, welcoming and whilst not the cheapest in the business are worth that little bit extra because you have unripped seats and toilet doors that lock, landlords that come and clean tables after people have left, barstaff that know your name and know what you drink. Fairly basic stuff you may think but it's not that way everywhere, I was shocked at how rundown the Calder looked last week and there are certainly other places just as bad.
The pubs that are surviving are doing what they do very well and keeping their regulars happy.
Hence the ever packed quiz at the Peel and the busy lunchtime trade at the Black Horse.
