I was 15 when I first went round town, though only had about 3 drinks, only had 2 quid and I wanted sausage and chips on the way home
I think if your children at a reasonable age are allowed wine with a meal or the odd taste then that should be ok.

Re: Underage Drinking
I dont think there's many people who do wait till the're 18, its not always the age that matters but how you treat it. I think the more a parent says no to alcohol the more a teenager would want it and there's always a way of getting it. I remember waiting outside Cellar 5 asking people going in to get me a bottle of Strongbow, I never had to wait long.

Re: Underage Drinking
I'd best answer my own question before anyone tells me off!!!
Yes i was going round town at the age of 16 - in fact the first time i went down accy was on my 16th birthday - felt my age and me and my mate came back to baxenden got a couple of bottles of olde english and drank them walking along the back lane back to rising bridge.
Before that i was drinking in the pub - with my mum & dad in attendance. In fact the pub landlord when i was 16 and could go into the pub on my own refused to let me drink alcohol in the pub even if i was with my mum & dad until i was 18.

Too many double standards- do as I say not as I do or more accurately as I did.

I don't think that it is a double standard. It is giving advice to one's kids based on one's experience. It is worse to say "It's ok because I did it when I was a lad."

Re: Underage Drinking
I didn't really drink until I was fifteen, even though I first went clubbing at twelve. I used to drink whisky and dry ginger, probably because it tasted most like pop.
The first time I got drunk it was on barley wine, when I was sixteen, and I got quite fruity with my friend's mum, something she recently reminded me about.

We used straight whyskey on both our kids gums. I imagine the little bit of alcohol, besides numbing the gums also had a bit of a sedating effect. I guess it was just something handed down. Would not have any bother with the Government telling me I can't do these sort of things.

It's only encouraging bad drinking habits if you make them rinse with coke and ice.
