Re: University of Blackburn/burnley
In real terms degrees mean nothing. I'm recruiting for people at work, high grade, technical roles and up to now teh best candidates have been those without degrees but have worked through the industry and have real world examples of how they can do teh job. I don't even look at education on their CVs as iit has no bearing on me deciding if I want to interview them. Likewise I don't have a degree, I left after one year and have worked through different industries to get to where I am now

I would totally agree with that. Shakers qoute;

that often force employers to take people on according to the amount of qualifications they have, regardless of experience, talent or common sense.

mainly still applies to the old 'establishment' employers who happen to be in the main government departments. Most modern day employers don't judge somebody first and foremost by their ability to pass an exam on subjects which are usually far removed from the real world.

That's all very well and good saying that but there is simply no way into the industry nowadays for someone with no experience straight out of college/school, of course the best people for the job don't tend to have degrees, that's because the best people for the job are those with experience and are therefore older and were around when it was possible to get in without the formal qualifications.
And as to the degrees being handed out left right and centre argument that is definitely true, it isn't the degree any more it's where you got it from, a degree that isn't from a Russel group is hardly worth the paper it's written on.

Re: University of Blackburn/burnley
maybe they should scrap that idea and increase availability for distance learning - no local colleges offer anything useful through distance learning and those of us who want to learn new skills and need to work full time only have the option of really long drawn out courses on an evening basis
which isnt possible for me to do i am sure that more people would be uptaking some courses if made available as distance learning especially it based ones

If nothing else this Government will be remembered for its gimmicks, its like one-a-day, I just wonder if the idea will suffer the same fate as "Super Casino's"
