My youngest, when she was 15, went on a school exchange visit to Bavaria. The family she stayed with took her, on the Sunday, to visit Granddad who had been a pilot in the Luftwaffe during WW2. He spoke no English and my daughter's German was only at "nearly O level" standard but they managed to communicate, with a bit of help from Herr Viens (the dad with whom she was staying). The old man had no qualms about discussing the war. He felt he had done his duty for his country but he was sad at the loss of life on both sides and had nothing but respect for the British forces and he emphasised that he had fought for Germany, not the Nazi party.
I was glad my daughter was able to talk to him. It helped her to understand the human element involved as opposed to the political.
We should celebrate the victory. We should also celebrate the deliverance of the world from the insanity by which it was overtaken and reinforce that it must never, ever, be allowed to happen again.

Re: VE day 60yrs of Freedom 8th May!
After listening to the radio today and listening to people's memories of VE day, l have decided to use my vote tomorrow and not just spoil my paper as l intended.
Listening to the real life stories made me realise just what we fought for- democracy.

I agree completely. And those who do vote are entitled to complain about those elected, without regard to which candidates they supported. If you've been voting long enough, some of the candidates you voted for are going to be disappointments.

Glad someone has noticed that.
Just like to add a personal note.
There were thousands of us training for Operation Zipper on VE Day. This was the invasion of Malaya before tackling the Japanese mainland.
Thank you America ( and anyone else involved) for dropping the Atom Bomb.
Owd Bert is on that DUKW.

Re: VE day 60yrs of Freedom 8th May!
There was a piece in the Lancs Eve Tel tonight about funding for community groups who want to organise events to celebrate and commemorate VE day and the end of the war. You have to apply by the 31st May and your event has to be held by the end of the year. Any not-for-profit organisation can apply for a grant between £500 and £20,000. Call 08457 458458 for a Home Front Recall Grant application form.

While atomic weapons have presented a whole new set of problems for the world, they saved a lot of lives (on all sides) by bringing WWII to a speedy conclusion.
I'd like to thank the U.K. for standing firm during WWII. The world today would probably be quite a different place had Britain either been defeated or sued for a truce with Hitler.

Re: VE day 60yrs of Freedom 8th May!
Just to put the record straight re post #21. My nephew (THOTH) has been using my wifes PC at weekend because his needs attention at the moment. Somehow or other I managed to get his name up on the post and it was by me -- Owd Bert. The comment about the atom bomb is my personal view for obvious reasons.
